Default Positives / Negatives of having Resonator removed..

I see that when people replace the mufflers or exhaust on their Impala's they seem to mention that they eliminated the resonator.

Why is this? better sound / performance or both?

Thanks

No Negatives.

Positives are weight reductions, lol, and better deeper sound.

Thanks for being the first to reply. I've been seeing alot of people here that remove it and was wondering what the deal was. My buddy works at the muffler shop down the block and I was thinking about MAYBE having mine removed.

You can barely tell the differance on the inside of the car. My g/f has a 04 Monte Carlo with dual Borla ProXS mufflers and it was a little to quiet so took the res. off and man did it change the sound. Louder on the outside and deeper sound. Just sounds much better all around. On the inside with the window's up now you can hear a slight hum, nothing turning on the radio can't drown out. Inside with the window's down you can hear it much better. As for my exhaust Flowmaster 40's I wouldn't touch the res. loud enough for me

so when you remove the resonator do you have to replace it with a "patch pipe" or a special piece of pipe? or can you use a 2.5inch diameter normal exhaust pipe?

So basically..

Borla ProXS - Better without Resonator

Flowmaster 40's - Leave it on.

I just don't to have the windows up in The Colder months and have that HUM on the inside.... I don't think my daughters would be happy with it.

If you are going to change mufflers I might keep the resonator, but since I am keeping the stock mufflers for now it is the way to go.

If you leave the stock mufflers on then remove the resonator. If you buy aftermarkets then leave it on. Either way you will like the results.

Just get a catless downpipe. It makes quite a difference soundwise. I've still got stock exhaust with resonator. When I put that downpipe on WOW! Way louder! Sounds like a stock trans am ws-6 now. Car pulls harder up top too.

Catless downpipe...... What has to be removed in order to do this? I just don't want to throw Codes.

You will, if you change down pipe at all you will throw codes. If you get or have a tuner then you can program out the codes so you won't get any dtc's.

Can this be installed to prevent codes ?? Worked in my '98 GTP.

http://www.zzperformance.com/grand_p...=834&catid=107

What programmer do I need to stop the code from tripping and do you know if exhaust work voids any manufacturer warranty??

I'd probably do downpipe, cat delete, resonator delete. all in 3" or whatever the inlet/outlet is on the stock mufflers/headers.

Any idea on expected HP/MPG gains from what I propose ?? maybe 1-2mpg, 5-10hp ?

Looks like a simulator to me, it will prolly work, as Ive seen others work on different cars (stangs) but don't go for testing with it on there. And warrenty will only be effected on the exhaust system, nothing more. Just don't burn a valve seat, they might try to blame that on loss of back pressure.

Removed the resonator and replaced it w/ a 2.5" stainless pipe on tuesday. Couldnt be happier. Just the right amount of sound improvement i was looking for. Should have done it 3 months ago when i bought the car!! Good luck.

will you loss performance with the Resonator taken off of the magnaflow cat-back exhaust? Is the resonator there for back pressure?

You will not lose performance or back pressure by removing your resonator. You will have some drone at cruising speeds and your exhaust will be louder and sound deeper. Personally I'd remove it. Just look at my sig. No negatives... just do it
