Default Which tires for winter on the GXP?

It will be here (Winter) before I know it! And my first with this car. I was think of Eagle F1's @ 235 x 50 x 18. Even with different wheel sizes they will fit. Any suggestions please. John Wilson

I've used Pirelli Snowsport's and Dunlop M3's over the past two winters. Both were OK. I bought the Snowsports as a good, used set off eBay for winter, 2006 (which was relatively dry) and ran them all the way into July, '07 (to say the least, I burned through the front pair). They handled great in the snow, and surprisingly well on otherwise wet or dry pavement. They weren't too loud, either.

I replaced the bad pair with a pair of used Dunlop M3's for last winter, and they were decent on the rears. Last winter was worse than 2006, overall, and given the fact that the 4 tires were well-used, I didn't fare as well as I hoped...but never got stuck and never had a problem maneuvering the sidestreets of downtown Buffalo.

I don't expect to have the money to invest in new winter tires this year, so it might make for an exciting few months. I'd like to hold off til next year, save up, and buy a complete set of 4 new winter tires to put on the stock 18's. I also toyed with buying a set of 16" black steelies and putting on the 9C1 police centercaps winter tires. 16" tires are considerably less expensive, so it would be a wash either way.

I'll be replacing my stock tires before winter on my Impala. I was thinking of going with the Michellin Pilot Sport A/S. Anyone have those?

Ya, I slipped and slided all over the place here in Denver last winter and NEED SNOW TIRES but was told by my idiot dealer that "they" don't make snow tires that fit our unique wheel wells. Please make a liar out of him because I am really missing my FWD 95 GP - that thing was unstoppable in the snow.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but a summer tire in size X is the same diameter/width as a winter tire in size X...so the dealer is full of s**t.

Go to tirerack and punch in the tire size you have and search for winter tires. Remember, for winter you can (should) always downsize a bit (go with a narrower tire) for better "cutting" action through the snow. So if you have a 245 on the front, find a comparable 235...or even 225 if it will fit on your stock wheels.

The Eagel F1's All season 35x50x18's fit on all 4 wheels 27.3" DIA. F1's fit wheels 6.5" to 8.5" wide. Stock tires DIA. 26.9" FRT. 27" REAR. John Wilson.

Correction - it wasn't the wheel wells, it was the brake calipers on the GXP's that need to fit.

I am also interested in this topic, this being my first winter in the car, and living in WI to boot. A word about Tire Rack, if you want to buy only a pair of tires for the winter, lie to them and say you have two others and simply need to replace a pair. Otherwise they will not sell you only two winter tires. Ask me how I know this...
