Which tires for winter on the GXP?
I replaced the bad pair with a pair of used Dunlop M3's for last winter, and they were decent on the rears. Last winter was worse than 2006, overall, and given the fact that the 4 tires were well-used, I didn't fare as well as I hoped...but never got stuck and never had a problem maneuvering the sidestreets of downtown Buffalo.
I don't expect to have the money to invest in new winter tires this year, so it might make for an exciting few months. I'd like to hold off til next year, save up, and buy a complete set of 4 new winter tires to put on the stock 18's. I also toyed with buying a set of 16" black steelies and putting on the 9C1 police centercaps winter tires. 16" tires are considerably less expensive, so it would be a wash either way.
Go to tirerack and punch in the tire size you have and search for winter tires. Remember, for winter you can (should) always downsize a bit (go with a narrower tire) for better "cutting" action through the snow. So if you have a 245 on the front, find a comparable 235...or even 225 if it will fit on your stock wheels.
