Transmission question
I think I already know the answer but here goes.
Only mod drop in K&N. Not over oiled and MAF cleaned with MAF cleaner about every 15k. Car has 75k on it. Car has maybe 10 passes at the track at a much earlier life. Babied and maintained very well otherwise. Transmission has been flushed three times so far. Second flush the transmission was overfilled about a quart. No big deal except while going up into mountains. Too much fluid cavitated the pump, strange sound and with air being drawn temps went up to 235F. Stopped at a dealer in New Mexico when it happened and they dropped pan for inspection, flushed and sent me on my way. All looked good and sounded good for about 3 months. Now....
Cold start up. Put into drive. Perhaps the second or third stop light about
1 out of 15 trips. Not predictable. Light acceration within first 30', car rpm comes up, and seems to jerk or lurch forward. this will only happen when car is cold. Shifts perfectly at all other times. Only from take off when cold.
I plan on taking it somewhere for an inspection. Aamco probably. if it is what I think, punt and sale the car. There has been soooo many transmission problems with these vehicles, is there any chance at all that I'm not looking at a new transmission? Thanks for any thoughts.
The current theory (I stress the word theory) that we worked out in my class is that the heat is stretching the chain in the trans. The way our exhausts run they bend right around the trannie, which may be the source of heat. A guy who has pulled apart a few blown up GXP trannies says the chain was stretched on all of them and metal fragments were coming off it. As a bandaid we've tried heat shielding around that section of the exhaust near the trans and an aftermarket trans cooler.
I'd take the car in now, drop the pan and look for metal shavings that show the chain is going. I assume you're long out of warranty so you're screwed. I hear Milzy Motorspots in Ohio is looking for a W body to put a M6 in as a test, you could always have that done!
at all tomorrow, I'm going to have them pull the pan and look myself as the pan is dropped. Not that I dont trust anyone but........I just have not decided who.
was changed for the first time today as previous services just flushed. I went back with their synthetic blend. As infrequent as this occurs the tech suggested I change out a thirty dollar electronic coolant sensor and check the wires well. If it does it again I'll follow his lead and clean the maf sensor again. It seems I've read somewhere that if oil gets on the maf sensor it may cause driveability issues. Thats about it. For a true litmus test I'm tempted to take her to the strip for about 6-7 passes. The car has been babied too long.
