Not a waste if you're just doing a quick swap, $40 for ring and pinion from a yard, could even be less in the for sale section. Stop being so negative
If you want a bit more gain and good DD manners, 3.42s are nice. If you want something that'll drive decent on the street yet be more of a track car then get the 3.73s.

Yeah I went from 2.73's to 3.42's a long time ago, first mod I did to the car. I do want 3.73's installed after my build. I would go 3.73's or just forget about it.
4.10's in a M6 is the BOMB.....car will slap get it!

I just want to make it clear that I'm in no way disputing how good 3.73s would be. I'm only disputing costs. It's a very cheap, quick and easy mod for 3.42s. You're out lube, cost for gears and posi additive. $65 I'd say.
Now, if you go 3.73s, you might as well do THAT right. So you're out gears ($190 minus shipping), install kit w/ new everything ($95 - ship) or basic ($49 - ship), lube and additive. For a total of about $258 to $305.
For a mild difference, those 3.42s aren't a bad choice. If you want a used set of 3.73s, check car-part.com. I noticed a FEW sets on there when I was getting prices. You can also find 4.10s on there if you're really inclined to do them heh

I have heard everyone say go 3.73's
I had this same question but i SEARCHED it and found that everyone likes the 3.73's so since i like to race and rarely drive my car because im at work all the time im going to go 3.73 because i want to KICK SOME *** and that seat of the pants feeling!!
Plus i want to be able to rip past someone when racing!!

I will try to sum things up...
going from a 3.23 gear to a 3.42 is a slight improvement but not worth the $$$ to most.
going from a 3.23 gear to a 3.73 will have a more noticible improvement and is moreso worth the $$$ to most.
now...going from a 2.73 gear to a 3.42 would have a very noticible improvement and definetly be worth the $$$.
If doing alot of highway I would just keep the 3.23's but if not then I would do 3.73's from my experience. Not going to lie 3.73's aren't my favorite gear on the highway but luckily I don't do much highway driving otherwise I would probaly have 3.23's or 3.42's. If you could have the job done free or knew how then just paying for the 3.42's would definetly better justify swapping them in but with the $300+ for labor I feel its not the best bang for the buck when having 3.23's to start out with.

i think he was inciting that you wont see a difference at all.. not necessarily just at the strip... you wont notice .1 on the street either..

Another vote for 3.73's
I have an A4 originally equipped with 3.23's and went with 3.42's. It was a big mistake! In fact, it's not even noticable in my opinion.
I would definately recommend the 3.73's with an A4, but no higher.

i went from 3:23 to 3:42. how's that grab everyone? did i notice a difference? you're DAMN right i noticed a difference. i was in the same boat about a year ago. what gear to go with? since my gf is from a town that is 2 hours away from me, and you never know if i'll drive the car down there, i figured 3:42 were best FOR ME. great highway manners and anyone who says you don't feel anything from it has obviously never done it. is it as much as going to a 3:73 would be? absolutely not, but is there a difference that you can feel? absolutely.

i couldnt agree more, this is the perfect way to help you choose right here guys, cause i havent done the swap yet and when i do im going with the 3.42's until my car is strictly a weekend cruiser/track car then i will go 3.73, but it will be quiet some time until i go completely ***** to the wall with my car.

yes this is true but i dont know what highways you drive on that are from 60-65, if you drive that slow in AZ youre bound to get shot. almost every highway around here is is conservatively 65-75 most are really around 70-75. and that would put you around 3k rpms or near, and at that rpm gas is being burnt rather quickly.

Thats about the average speed we can get away with here w/o getting nailed. I would say my average speed is around 70 on the hwy. At 70mph I am around 2700-2800. Before I changed to 3.73 I did the whole gas milage thing. Going to 3.73 from 3.23 I lost about 5-10 miles on a full tank depending on how much I step on the pedal. Not a big loss in my eyes.
