3.23's to 3.42
#3
That isn't a real large increase but you will notice it. I have 3.73's and love them. They rip hard out of the hole and with your converter you will see a nice increase. I do mostly highway with mine and am just fine cruising at 70 - 75 mph. So if your looking for a little extra, 3.42's aren't bad but if your going to spend the time and money you might as well do 3.73's.

When my rear end went, I got a M6 rear (99+ for Torsen posi) and it was a nice increase. For whatever reason, OD has some nice power now! It's not a pooch and giving it a little gas actually moves the car w/o needing to kick down.
So I say, if you feel like getting some 3.42s for cheap from someone who's upgraded, I totally say do it!

Not a waste if you're just doing a quick swap, $40 for ring and pinion from a yard, could even be less in the for sale section. Stop being so negative
If you want a bit more gain and good DD manners, 3.42s are nice. If you want something that'll drive decent on the street yet be more of a track car then get the 3.73s.

ive got some 3.23s for sale if you want them.... you would see just as much increase as going to 3.42s.......
go at least 373s or you will be unhappy..

You'll be lucky to see a 1/10th reduction in ET. LUCKY.
Is it worth it to you?
I switched from a 2.73 rear to a 3.42 rear and it gave a significant increase, but looking at the difference to my brothers 3.23 car it's not even noticable at all.
I'd say go 3.73 or not at all.

I guess assuming someone does all city driving is just as bad as me saying 3.73s will hurt his drivability. So to each their own. It all depends on what his plans are for his car. Both my Firebirds were 3.23 cars, and I noticed a fair change on the *** dyno with just 3.42s.

let me put it this way... no matter what you do with your car.. where you drive it.. how you drive it.... 373s will not effect driveability.. no stalling, bucking nothing like that... if you think gears would effect driveability i would hate to think what an ms4 cam with 4k stall is like

yea, 373s.... even for a big cam... they love small gears and 3k stalls..
opened minded a little bit here.. that is most DEFINITELY not the way it is... if you dont care about times or racing.. then yea whatever... but if you do.. go big or go home..... these threads kill me.... /rant

Yes, go big or go home. Throw in some 5.xx gears in there!!
I agree that 3.73s are the ideal gearing for a A4, I'm not disputing that, as well as 4.10s for an M6. That's just how it is on our cars. All I'm saying is that if he's not planning on racing it and just wants a bit more pep, that 3.42s are a fine upgrade, especially for the cost! They can be had for little to nothing.
This thread doesn't kill me though, it's some of the people in it...
