Default Help with ALDL cable

I just got my aldl cable last night (http://www.aldlcable.com/sc/details.asp?item=aldlobd2u) and tried using it, to hopefully find out whats wrong with my car and it would not work. I installed the disc that came with the cable, then plugged the cable into my laptop and installed it. Then I installed datamaster. Everthing said it installed successfully so i went out to my car to try it. nothing worked. i tried a coupl different things and it would not work.
I have now uninstalled everything and i'm ready to start fresh. can anyone with expirence with it help me out?

Is it a problem with the port on your laptop?

Well personally I have not been able to get a cable to work through the USB port. I have to use the 9 pin serial--hence use of an older laptop.

If you've installed the cable and assigned the com port your good. You just have to figure out how the datamaster's software works, I thought the same thing the first time I used it. There's some free software out there that you can try it on, to tell whether the cable is working or not. As for your DataMaster, what you want to do is open up the program, go to the File tab and click the record ALDL Data, a warning screen will come up telling you how many uses you have left if you haven't purchased it yet, click ok to that and you should be good.

I'm interested in knowing what you find out. I was planning on getting this cable to interface my 95. So please keep us updated. Thanks

Just saw the post where you said that nothing ever works for you using usb. If you do have the serial port, you could find a serial to usb turn around, possible at radio shack or a computer store.

Well I my USB experience has been through Vista. I would like to know how to get the SOB to work so I can stop using the old laptop. My proven combo has been Win XP with 9 pin serial port. If anyone can make this **** work, I wanna know too.

dhdenney, with Windows Vista you can make a program run using Windows XP format. I'm not sure if you can do it with all programs, but I've had to do that with a couple. If you click on the properties of the program, then click on the compatabilty folder and click Windows XP (service pack 2), you do it in there. Hope this helps you.

I see what you are talking about doing that. Does it just magically work after doing that cause I can try it. Computers frustrate me.

After you tell it to use that service pack, and you select your com port, you should be good

right click on the icon on your desktop
click on properties
click the compatibility tab
check "run this in compatibility mode for" and select XP service pack 2
check "run this program as an admin"

and you should be good to go.
