th 400
Most who have done it agree it is a race car thing to do. The lack of lockup and OD substantially decreases drivability and on the street you will be less comfortable with a decent amount of stall.
There are dedicated racecars making the 4L60E last even in the 9s so most folks are way too quick to jump on this bandwagon.
th 400 = big block
th 350 = small block
glide = crazy fast cars
i wouldnt throw a th 400 behind a lt1 unless your making 800+ horsepower. like tauber unit said th 400s rob tons power, i believe around 25%, and they weigh a ton.
Id stick a od tranny such 4l60e, 700r4, and 200r4.
we need to know more about your car and intended uses before helping you reach a verdict.
if you are daily driving it not having OD is going to kill your gas milage, especially on the highway.
if its a weekend fun (limited use) car or track car go for a TH350. they are cheap and easy to build and will hold all the power you need.
if its your DD and you do lots of highway driving you will be kicking yourself in the *** not having OD plus running at 3500 RPM going 70 MPH on the highway is annoying. i had a third gen with a TH350 prior to my IROC.

i think that car had 4.30's or somthing like that. that was a dumb setup anyways. i bought it for $1300 had a wimpy 305 that was cammed with vortec heads. probably didnt make 250 at the rear wheels and the idiot put a TH350 (it stalled around 2500 but i dont know the specs)vand 9" on it. it was stupid. like the 305 would break theTH350 and 9". it was a dog. i never took it to the track. sold it and make about $500 profit after fixing it up a little bit. and now have my 1985 IROC with a 350 700R4 and a new 9" with 4.10's. which is setup to drag.
you will probably want to retain OD.
i am telling you 3500 RPM at like 70 MPH is annoying especially on a 45 min drive.
