I don't ever change just the chain. The parts wear together. As the chain wears and stretches, it elongates the tooth slots on the gears. Sticking a new chain on worn gears does not make any sense to me.

You can always find lots of part numbers on my Tech Page (link in sig).

F-body timing set part numbers are listed:

1993-1997 stock crank sprocket 10128346

1993-1994 stock cam sprocket 10128349

1995-1997 stock cam sprocket 10206039

1993-1997 stock timing chain 10128485

ok guys, thanks for all the posts and pm's id be lost without em. My next question is this. What do you think I should do? Use my rebuilt opti and get the correct chain and sprockets for my application? Or swap it all for the vented setup? I have to get the later cam if i do the swap right? is that because the dowel is longer? Also keep in mind that in on a super tight budget, and when i mean tight i mean TIGHT, like so tight that i cant finish untill i get my tax return.

Rebuilt, as in you are going to rebuild the original opti with 100k miles on it? Or has it been rebuilt before?
If it's the original opti, I would replace it now, while it's easy.
I have a very low miles, stock, later year LT1 cam in my garage.

Just get a new OEM Opti, timing chain and sprocket. If you were to order a new camshaft it would come with the longer dowel pin regardless. You can cut it to size (like I did w/ my LE cam) or use a shorter one.

If money is that tight, I would only replace what's necessary to get the car running again. In my opinion, it's not worth doing the vented opti swap unless you're doing a cam swap also... and for that matter it's not worth doing a cam swap stock for stock.

I would just get an oem timing set and get it back together. Later down the road if you have to rebuild the engine or decide to do a cam swap, that's the time to do the conversion.

The dowel pin is not the only thing. The nose of the early stock cam has a small hole in it. The later cams have a large hole. You can't put a vented opti on a cam that has the small hole. Won't ever fit.

Yeah, you seen to know your stuff! Thanks for the info. Im just gunna run the rebuilt one i have. It worked fine when i took it out so the msd cap n rotor should keep it that way for at least a while i hope. Plus with the rebuild kit i used it is now vented same as a stock later model.

^^ Chevy dealerships charge a arm and a leg for parts..learned the hard way once which won't happen again. GMPARTSDIRECT will sell you the same GM items for almost half the cost.

That's not as funny as this one mechanic telling me that you have to remove the heads to take out the opti.
