Default What do you think?

Hello all, I'm new to the board so I may not know too much about how everything works here, but here is why I'm starting this thread.

My friend has an LT1 engine for sale, with 20k original miles. He has told me it has aluminum heads, and stock internals. So from what I'm assuming it's probably got everything from oil pan to intake and he said he would throw in an aftermarket TB for me. He also has a 96" Impala SS that he put headers on so he would also give me the manifolds for that (which I've read suck on here, but that's fine for now). He is asking $600 obo, and I know the guy and he's a pretty good dude. What do you all think about $600 for an LT1 with aluminum heads, 20k original miles, and stock internals? What kind of things are notorious for causing problems on LT1 blocks? I don't have anything to put it in yet, but we should be getting the 350 off the engine stand put back into my dad's Camaro after I paint the subframe and firewall, so I was wanting to make this my first engine build. Eventually I would be putting it into a 1st gen S10 (square bodies) and making it a drag truck with a carb'd setup. Sorry for the long post

Forgot to ask, would this be a good first engine to build? I work at a dealership so if for any reason something needed replacing, I would be able to get the parts for decent pricing

Thanks everyone,
-Eric

If you want to carb it I'd say get a Gen 1 sbc. The LT1 has a very limited aftermarket and carbing it is not the easiest thing to do.

But that's just me. Also $600 is VERY GOOD for a 20k longblock.

If you are going to be running a carb then you are better off to go with a plain SBC. More options and cheaper to build, but a very similar engine.

Theres plenty of super fast carbed LT1s just so you know.
The guys do have a couple good points about parts and cost, but it wouldnt be nearly as cool!
$600 OBO is a great price for a maintained and running LT1, Not so great for a blown up one. It can happen I blew one up with 27,000 miles b4

I hear these things like to get hot especially at idle, I've sat in my buddies 97' WS6 and it's gotten up past 180*, and I can hear what sounds like a lifter ticking underneath the hood, but that's not my car so I'm not touching it. I've been itching to start an engine and drivetrain build ever since I started college, it just makes me want to start new projects all the time. I'm good with wiring and everything I just don't know if I have the budget yet.

Are there any members on here that have made project threads from converting a V6 f-body to an LT1 f-body? I would like to really see what all is involved. Thanks guys you've been a really great help

I think 210 is normal stock operateing temp. Fans don't even kick on till after 200.

Woah, maybe it's just me then, I barely see my truck over 160*, he tells me the check engine temp light comes on so yeah I really have no idea about what is up with his car

160? I think you have a broken Tstat in the S-10. They should run about 210 also (assuming it's not freezing cold out).

If going carb... just get a gen SBC for ease and cost.
Personally, I'd get an early 2nd gen and put the LT1 in that. Uh... wait... that's what I DID do.

But yes, that cost does sound good.

I would want to swap it into mine, I'm just worried about emissions. The though has definately crossed my mind more than once about a V8 2nd gen S10 though.
