GD this water pump seal!!! Man Im finding alot of things I dont like about working on these cars. I have went through 2 of the Fel Pro water pump seals. I couldnt get either one on w/o ripping it. I now see that there is a trick to this after doing a search about them and Im not the only one having a hard time. I ended up putting the original seal back on it . Its smaller then the Fel Pros and its more like a rubber seal. It went in with ease. Looks to be alot better. I added a little RTV to it but it probably wont help it. The old seal looked pretty good. I was wondering how prone these are to leaking and what are the chances of mine leaking. It didnt leak before. Will a small leak kill the optispark? Its a 93 LT1 unvented. Thanks.

You put the original seal that you took off back on? I don't see how you could have got it off without doing at least some damage. It's gonna leak. And when the w/p seal leaks, you are gonna know it. It slings oil all over the place. Use a new seal and the tips for installing it without damage.

Not jumping a thread or anything, but what do you guys typically see as the best seal - the felpro or original GM as it seems mine is doing the same with the felpro piece and leaking again?

Well the tool I made I cut a 2-liter bottle and rolled it up to resemble a valve stem tool/helper. It should work I think, I hope. Why didnt they include a tool to put this thing on. They did with the valve seals??
Here is how to install it perfect everytime.
1. Take the water pump drive coupling and emmery cloth it to make it very smooth.
2. Oil the coupling.
3. Slide the coupling through the front of the seal and onto the coupling.
4. Wait a minute or two.
5. Place the coupler on the drive shaft and slide the seal off and into the timing cover.
This has worked for me every single time. BTW all I use is the Fel-pro seals.
