Im going to bring this thread back from the dead with a question or 2
currently have a stock bottom ended LT1 with a p600b @ 6 lbs of boost.
in the process is a 383 w/ an F1a @15(ish) lbs of boost.
Im trying to figure out what head to put on this motor. 6 speed car, mostly street driven. Little track time. Would the 215 be a better bet for a street motor over the 227?

I have pretty much the same combo... 383 with F1A on 15 psi. I'm running the race ported 210's out of the box. I don't believe the 215's are available anymore. I would say the 210's would be best for the street, I'm still on 91 octane with a conservative tune and it's making 670 rwhp non-intercooled.

I went with the 210's because they are the largest ones offered that use stock pushrod geometry. I'm not convinced that leaning over the intake pushrod will be reliable in the long-term.

I believe you will need a different intake manifold with the raised runner 215's, or at least do some work to the stocker. With the 227's you will need either shaft mount rockers, or the special offset stud mount rockers that AFR sells. Shaft run around $800ish++ the offset AFR stud mounts are just over $300 iirc. You need a girdle with them too, they are $80-$150. I think you'd be fine with the 210's if it is mostly street driven.

Tony Sheppard runs AFR 227's
OutlawZ runs AFR 227's (he is looking to get the nitrous LTx record)

Dave DiLuca "SLED28"-9.11@155, 396 LT1, AFR's, TNT Fogger, 3415lbs
Madman-9.18@154,96 Firebird, 380ci LT1 with GTP AFR 215s (I think "Madman" knows a thing or two about cars )
Andrey Sokolov-9.48@144 94 Z28 A3 383, YSI, 190 AFR's, 9"
Jason Brisson(OutlawZ) 9.54@130.21, 95 Z28 A3, CSM Race Engines 383 AFR 227's, SR cam, Single plane, TH400, 9", 3.89's, 3400 race weight, NPF single stage plate n2o
Tony Shepherd 9.56 @ 143.68, 93 Z28 , 397 LT1, AFR 227, 3450lbs, 250shot
I ran AFR 220's out of the box 9.08 @ 159.7 mph back in 2003. (LT1 Solid 383 Nos fogger th400 3300lbs). I like the AFR product but I had a set of heavily worked TFS 18 degree heads on a 421 Dart motor with fogger run 8.0's at 170 mph (same car with a glide at 3150lbs) so that take from that what you will. BTW not that anyone cares but my name is Vince McCauley

Too big for a street oriented engine IMO....

A 210 or a 227 would be the biggest I would probably recommend to keep some part throttle bottom end in that engine (which off boost your lower CR and power robbing blower isnt helping).

A 210 Comp ported head would probably be the ultimate set-up....moderate cross section, really good intake flow and more importantly an exceptional exhaust port. It will make more power than you could probably apply to the ground honestly

But thats the idea right.....LOL

Cheers,
Tony

195's and 210's is what Ive always heard is the optimal runner for a 'hot' street car. For a street car, either head will be killer. I run AFRs on my car.

Nice! What's the specs on the motor? Not a street car i take it.? I've been meaning to get over there to spend some time on the dyno. Probably next tax season when I install some new heads.

There are only available for the Gen I engines currently (no LT applications) and are priced at $2225 including a .700 solid roller spring and a steel retainer.....upgrade springs, milling, and Ti retainers are optional and add to the cost obviously.

Independent dyno testing and response from a few people running them has been extremely positive! We started shipping them about a month ago.

Cheers,
Tony
