i know thats where mine is but i could have sworn iv seen some with it above the oil filter.

93's and early 94's had it located above the oil filter, but his car is a 96 so you're correct

does the pressure creep down or does it fall straight to zero?

go to this site it my also help you. http://www.go-fast.org/z28/diagnostics.html and there is an auxillary plug right next to your oil filter that you can connect an auto meter mechanical oil psi gauge. my 94' formula stock gauge was reading about 20 psi @ a cold start and close to 10 or lower psi when warmed up. I put the mech gauge and it read something like 60 psi when cold and 35 to 40 when warmed up. car dying sounds like ignition problem.
