Default 1993 trans-am speedo calibration?

One more quick question. I just purchased this '93 Trans-am and I haven't had a whole lot of time to look everything over and figure what exactly I have as far as computer chip or flash/speed density/MAF/etc. My question is the rear end has been swapped to a 3.73 from the stock 3.23. The speedo is off and I wasn't sure what was involved in getting it calibrated to read properly. Is it a program you need a laptop to basically flash the computer and reprogram or a gear in the tranny or something else to get it to read right? Thanks.

93's are simple. There old school. It has a non electronic 4L60. All you have to do is replace the speedo gear in the tailshaft of the tranny. You just need to find out which speedo gear to get. I believe they are color coded.

They used to sell speedo relaibration boxes, I'm not sure who still makes them
but I picked one up used a few years back and wired it in. Swapping the
gears in the tailshaft works too, it's just more of a pain.

dakota digital makes a nice box to recalibrate the speedo.

The oddest part about our 93s, is that the ECM has a VSS Pulse table!! Yet, they run off the gear >_>

If there is a color code for the gears, and someone knows it or has a link/pic, I could really use it! I got a trans with red gears and mine are seafoam green (not the automotive sea foam lol). And while that gear oddly worked perfect for my 3.42s and 255/45 tires, it's quite worn out and I'd rather not reuse it if I didn't have to.

Thanks for the info...does anyone know where to find the gear I need then? I have the 150mph speedo and 3.73 rear gears...now where do I go? Basically, who sells the gear for the tail shaft then? I take it Dakota Digital is something for the computer right? Like a program or flash/chip? Or is it somewhere I could get the hard gear itself as well? Thanks again.

Dakota digital is going to be a pain in the *** and they are mainly for 6 speed cars.

You need a 15 tooth(green) drive gear and a 43 tooth driven.

If yours has the red 17 tooth drive gear, you need a 45 tooth driven. assuming you have a 26 inch tall tire.

Check out this web site, it has a table you can use to find which gear you need. You also need the magnetic pick-up driven gear, or it wont work at all.

Whats the driven and drive teeth counts on red and green? Because coincidentally I have both colors haha I'm just curious what tooth counts = correct calibration for what gears, and which gears the red is actually for. There any sort of table chart?

Make sure you specify its for an electronic speedo, not mechanical. I made that mistake when I got my speedo gears. Also, replace the clip. Raptor trans is Bossier, LA has been pretty good in getting me parts out quick.

Alright, I have since measured my wheels and checked the site listed above a couple times now and am having some issues. The measurement I get for tire diameter keeps coming up as between 24.5" and 24.75" and that's using their listed method as well as measuring the overall height. That would be great if they listed a diameter of 24 or 25 even...which they don't. What do I do next then? Take mine out and see what color it is first I guess? I have a 3.73 gear ratio in the rear and that was from an original 3.42...anyone who has already gone from this ratio to a 3.73 have the right tranny gear or color for my application? Thanks again guys.

Round up to 25" But since they don't have that either, I'd say it's possibly user error (not offense). What's your tire specs? ###/##R16 And are your tires inflated to 32psi?

Yea, normally I would say that too, no offense taken. I measured from ground to center of axle, overall tire height, same number. Tires are inflated for sure. It has a 245/50/16...

Those tires should be 25.64" So you can either go with 26" or go 25" and assume you're under inflated... or something heh

This helps quite a bit too, to see how far off you'll be with new gears and the stock speedo setup.
http://www.f-body.org/gears/

Also, taking into account your name with "94" in it, and assuming that's the year car you own... You don't have to buy new speedo gears You are a lucky one with the 4L60E which your speedo is ran off the computer and changing a setting in it impacts your speedo's accuracy. So while us gear driven people have to deal with either being slightly off if we use odd tire size or gears, you people can use anything you want

I used to have a '94 T/A...I have a '93 now. I will just use a 26 and hope it works...at $11 I will get another if it isn't the one... :-p

That site is confusing me :\ From all I've read, it's pretty much pointing to the fact that I shouldn't have 2 of the same colors and that if I did, the end result would be quite a fucked up speedo calibration lol

So needless to say, I emailed the person under the contacts for Speedo Gears.

Thanks, hopefully they clear some of it up. I thought it was a bit confusing, but I didn't want to say anything until I read a bit more into it...

I should also note, that I DO have the same colored gears, both in the trans that came from my car (a greenish color for my 3.23s but off 3mph slower, but oddly are dead on for my 3.42s) and the junk one I bought (red, apparently for 3.73s)

Well, I have the 3.73, so I might be interested in buying your if you think you may want to sell it? Or don't need it?
