Sounds similar to what I am doing right now. I bought a super low mile shortblock and I am going through it. I reused the entire bottom end (only had 32K miles anyway) and I'm just installing clevite bearings, total seal rings and some ARP hardware. I can't wait to see what yours ends up like too!

ive been thinking about just keepnig the stock pistons for now too. because i dotnw ant to shell out alot of money for pistons or rods if i build up a 383 over the winter or next spring/summer. or if i decide to build up an engine thats for.... some force feeding

ill probably be doing that. just replace everything that needs to be replaced and keep whatever i can. i plan on building up an engine in a year or two and i dont see the reason in spending so much on an engine thatll probably only see 400 hp with no spray.

Default New parts!

i got my cylinder heads back from the machine shop stripped down and semi clean. ive decided im going to do a gasket match to them. there horrible! i cant believe how off the they are from the gaskets! here are some pics showing the heads along with my new parts! alot of ARP bolts and studs, and of course my comp cams gold rockers!

new parts!

Here are my new comp cams 1.6 NSA 7/16 rockers vs PRW's 1.6 3/8 SA rockers

there both really nice pieces. but the comp cams feel so much smoother then the PRW's. over all tho for the price the PRW's are very hard to beat. they are of course heavier then the wide bodied forged aluminum comps but some im sure see that as not being a big enough problem to not spend the extra money on the comps. i however dont wish to spend more money later on rockers again like ive done before.. i dont doubt the PRW's but i feel more secure with the comps. i dont really want to sell the PRW's even tho i dont need them anymore. there really nice pieces :p

Nice man, nothing better than looking at new pieces out of the box before they go in. Are you going to gasket match the intake as well?

PRW's are nice pieces for the price!

I'll try to find you a good article on gasket matching b/c if you remove all the material to gasket match you'll actually hurt airflow.

Gotta love new parts, its like Christmas! lol

If you are going to do anything, do a little bowl work right below the seat. I would not gasket match. If you don't have one, find a 1997 intake (you will see why right away).

the intake i already gasket matched. i only opened up the very end and just smoothed everything else out. with the heads ill just be smoothing out the rough edge off the face. its creating to much turbulence like that.

they really are nice for the price. i somehow came up with a good enough reason to spend the extra money for the comp cams. next time ill def use the RPW's

id appreciate it if you could find a good article. im not going to to to crazy with it. i just want to smooth it out as much as possible.

if you make the intake runners to big and no step in it then the velocity wont be high enough for it to work properly

Just alittle update on whats going on. i talked with the builder today and were going to bore the block .030" and go with forged speed pro pistons. reusing my connecting rods and having my crank cut and polished. im also in the process of gasket matching my heads and i must say the exhaust side is coming out rather nicely. ill post pictures later tonight when i get home. i cant wait till its back together!

Default more pics

as i said. here are some more pics of my build

head parts

stock crank ready to be cut and polished

this is the water pump drive with a nice groove in it from the seal

i couldnt seem to find a new one so i figured id repair it

all clean

stock exhaust ports with my felpro copper gaskets. the gaskets match up next to perfect on my mac mid headers so i figured id take the opportunity while the heads are bare to open them up abit

took out alot of material but made sure to keep everything as smooth as possible

now thats more like it!

and with alittle bowl work aswell.

i know i should do alittle more bowl work but i dont want to **** anything up to badly. i think how i have them now is pretty damn good. the exhaust is going to flow so much more smoothly out of the cylinder. i have to finish up the bowl area on the driver side head alittle more tomorrow before i move onto the intake side.. im kinda nervous about that but i dont plan on taking to much off. ill see how it works

Looks like you are doing a sweet job man. Nice work with the water pump shaft! I wish I could weld and had access to precision tools.
Heads are coming along nicely, even though is small gains, every little bit counts, good thing you are being conservative and not trashing a set of heads.

thanks alot man! ive only been welding for about a year or so. it all depends on how badly you want to know how to do it. thats what im overly concerned about with my heads. i really really Really dont want to **** them up. but as you said every little bit counts so im hoping alittle bit here and alittle bit there will add up to some nice numbers when i get it all back together. im going to be boring the block .030" with forged fel prop pistons. my builder is getting a helluva price on them. the more time passes the antsier i get to finish it up and unleash the boat anchor fury!
