Default Pulling lt1 with m6 or without

Pullin the lt1 from 94 camaro,is it easier to pull m6 with the motor or to unbolt trans . Motor is coming out top. How hard is it to align input shaft and motor when going back in? THANKS JB

It is not too hard to put back in. You cant be a weakling if your doing it by yourself. (unless you have trans jack)

After pulling my motor from top, I will recommend to just drop everything at once out bottom if you can. There is way less unbolting everything in cramped space.

+1. Anyone who has done BOTH ways will never pull it out of the top again.

I've done it so many times (on my car and friends) I am just going to pull it from the top with no tranny. If I change a pan or gasket I'll drop the k member a little bit and change that out with the k member hanging on the last few threads of the bolts

It doesn't matter how many times you've pulled it from the top, try it from the bottom just once.

Um speak for your self. Hell I even put the big block in from the top. By my self. I prefer the top method

No brake bleeding involved.
Able to roll the car out after pulling motor.
No shifting the cradle

Is just a few reasons off the top of my head...

What does shifting the cradle mean?
Brake bleeding doesn't take long, easy to do with a mighty vac.
You can roll out the engine & tranny, similar to rolling the car away.

I have done both methods several times, I'll never pull the engine out the top again if I don't have to.

Um or not bleeding the brakes at all

Yeah but what happens when you remove the engine and transmission and you need to roll the car out of the garage. Let me guess remove engine and trans and put cradle back into car. So you can move car.

For the person with no lift and a lift that they can not leave their car on indefinitely. thru the top is easier and less work.

I have done it all kinds of ways. and I am not saying there is a correct way. But if you actually have to use the area you are working in when done or you dont like the additonal work. Then pulling it thru the top is the smartest way

I can see your point. But if you didn't have to move the car...what method would you choose?

Lucky. I have done the out the bottom method with a cherry picker lifting the body, and I have also done it with two large floor jacks, one on each side to lift the body. I found both ways MUCH easier than pulling the motor from the top.

I took my engine out the top in 2-3 hours. Pulling it with the transmission is much faster but you'll have to remove the hood. I was also using impact gun makes it go lot faster.

Out the Top
remove hood
drain engine oil
drain trans oil
drain coolant
raise front of the car
remove coolant hoses
remove radiator / fans
remove crank pully
undo power steering line
undo fuel line
disconnect battery
remove engine harness
remove drive shaft
unbolt engine mount
unbolt exhaust / Y-pipe
remove torque arm
unbolt shifter
unbolt trans crossmember
pull engine out

Out the Bottom

disconnect battery
drain coolant
remove coolant hoses
remove engine harness
Raise front of car
support subframe
remove front wheels
remove shocktower bolts
undo fuel line
disconnect brake line
remove drive shaft
remove torque arm
unbolt shifter
unbolt trans crossmember
unbolt exhaust
lower engine/subframe
pull engine off subframe

I have helped pull from the top on a friends car, it sucked compared to going out the bottom. The picture of the car is just showing that i put the k member back under the car. I pulled the motor and trans, seperated the motor from trans, put in on the stand, and put the k member back under the car in one day taking my time. It was my first time pulling an engine out by myself and it was spuper easy and a load of fun, and i dident break anything!! lol And bleeding the breaks isnt hard, i dont know y it would even be an issue.

Yup I have worked at chevy dealer for about 10 years, ive removed a lot both ways, worked in heavy line and tran's department. Ive always done it out the top on the LT1's because had to roll the car out of my rack/lift to pull in other cars.

If its a LS engine corvette I would say out the bottom only! lol

Nothing personal, but after meeting some dealer employees, that doesn't mean much to me anymore...

You dont think its easier to pul the motor off the subframe and put the subframe back under the car quick? Its only 6 big bolts.

Its hard to say who would be faster and its more than just 6 bolts.

If you got 2 fast guys doing it out the top and out the bottom it would be a close race. Both ways took me about 2-3 hours and that was using a lift.
