Upgrade to a 7/16 stud, as far as springs there are tons out there that will work with the 306, and there is absolutely no need for a hydra-rev kit on that cam.

Absolutely. There are small blocks nation wide making big power turning over 9000rpm w/out a rev. kit and have been doing so since before a rev kit was hacked into production.

Well as someone who actually has one in one of my hydraulic roller engines what they are designed to do is allow you to run less stiff valve springs which reduce your seat and open pressure which helps keep you from collapsing the plunger in the hydraulic roller lifters when running a big hr cam. Unlike a solid roller lifter which usually run 200# on the seat a hydraulic roller lifter plunger will collapse under those kind of spring pressues. The hydra rev kit adds additional pressure to the lifter body instead of the plunger to keep from floating the valves.

This is exactly what I have always heard about rev-kits, but I am no expert on the subject.

Have seen a rev kit or two kill an engine by eating into the aluminum head and sending flakes into the oil.

I see both sides of this argument. Personally being the poor guy I am I would say spent $100 extra on better pushrods and springs for insurace against breakage. Cheaper than a rev kit.

With modern springs we get away with a lot of things on hydraulic lifters we could not a few years back.

I 100 % agree. Plus you can get better than stock lifters now.

I think we can get away with a lot more on stock lifters than many folks are willing to believe.
We have some good choices from the stock replacement LS7s at $100, to the GMPP "cadillac racing" at what $225 to $600 for Morels.

The Cadillacs work pretty good...
