Default Not charging

Well, my buddies 95 T/A isn't charging. We tested the alternator at Advance and it passed. We checked the wires and they are good. The exciter wire from the harness has 12v coming from it. The alternator has a magnetic pull to the back of it. I was told that it meant it was charging. It is reading 12.09V on the volt meter at the back of the alternator. I let him use my alternator and we have the same results. Has anyone ever seen a bad gauge cause the alternator not to charge? It only reads 8v.

-Thanks

I had something similar happen on my Suburban. After I chased it for a week it ended up being a loose wire on the starter.

Did you check the ground to the motor? Ground from motor to chasis? Terminal screws to the batter are tight?

Sure it isn't the battery? When my car sat for over 6 months the battery was shot because I didn't keep a trickle charger hooked up to it.

It was reading 12v, which is battery volts.

He's checked the grounds. He's not too famaliar with these cars. I may need to recheck everything for him. Probably going to just un hook all the stuff that has to do with the starting, charging system and start from scratch.

It was dead, we now have an Optima Red Top. Works like a champ.
