Default sputtering bad only in heavy rain?????

ok...been dealing with this for almost a year now and cant figure out what the hell it is. whenever it rains heavy the car starts sputtering, skipping, and backfiring until i shut it off and restart it....then it runs fine. and when i have to go through a puddle that i cant avoid it starts running like crap again until i shut it off and restart. so what gives???? two of my friends with lt1's do not have this problem.

Are your plug wires good, sometimes if they get wet they'll and are cracked it'll do that.

My old formula did the same thing when it would rain but when it was dry it ran fine. Maybe you're splashing some water on the opti. That's my vote.

Splashing the opti is not a problem if everything is in good condition and installed right.

It does sound like an ignition thing though, maybe a wire is damaged, maybe the cap and rotor old or not well sealed, maybe the vent harness is in bad shape.

i'll check the cap and wires. its just weird that when you cut it off and restart it that it runs fine. it's like its resetting something.

I had the exact same problem with my car. I noticed you have pacsetter LT's as do I. When you put the O2's in, did you use actual extensions, or did you cut and splice the wires? I cut and spliced my wires and the problem that I was having was that water would get into my connections and cause the car to run just like I had a bad O2. I know because it ran that way until I replaced my 02's. If water is getting into your connections it could be sending false signals to the PCM which would cause the car to run like crap at lower RPM but if you go WOT the miss seems to go away after a second or two. The reason for this is because of the different tables used at WOT Vs. partial throttle in your PCM.

The fact that the car works just fine when you restart it is because when the car first starts up it uses a default program where it ignores the 02 sensors. After it recieves a signal from the temps sensor saying that it is warmed up, It goes into Closed Loop and actually starts taking the 02 sensor readings into consideration.

no, I just took some heat shrink tubing and sealed out the water, been working so far. If you used butt splices and can't get a hold of heat shrink, you could always use some silicone and close up the butt splices.

What he ^ said. I had the same problem...sort of. I two spliced the wires instead of buying extensions at first but decided to buy extensions and replace the o2 sensors at the same time. The ceramic coating messed up the new o2 sensors so ended up going back to the original o2 sensors... I shortened the original o2 sensors back to stock length with the extensions and ran into the same problem. Instead of buying new o2 sensors as these work fine (although I have read that splicing them is not the best idea...as it can cause low readings) I ended up insulating them better to keep water out..works great now and no more problems! Hope it works out for you.
