Default Largest Cam

What is the biggest cam you can have without having to change your gears? I've been thinking about ditching the 503 on my current setup and getting a custom cam. I'm not sure how the driveability would compare though.

You should change gears with a stock cam. Gear swap will make a bigger difference than the cam swap.

If you still have stock gears with the setup in your sig that is assbackwards.

I say that after having made basically the same mistake. I tried a little 210/224 ZZ4 cam before I had the supporting mods. The car's performance changed little, then as I gave it all the proper supporting mods those things resulted in BIG gains.

if he has 3.42 there not too bad for his current cam, you would benifit running 3.73+

There's not really a limit to cam size in regaurds to gears. It's just how driveable do you want the car to be. A big cam (or the stock cam for that matter) will drive much easier with bigger gears.

It really comes down to what you are looking for out of your car. If you are just not wanting to do gears because you know it will weaken your stock rear, then I would say at least put a girtle on it, put some gears in it, and stay away from sticky tires.

If you are looking for the best out of both worlds and the strength of your rear is not an issue, then I would go with a nice CC306 or GM847 cam and put some 4.10's in.

3.42s and a T56 makes 6th nearly useless, unless you like lugging the engine which is VERY bad. 4.10s are the way to go with a T56. You have to consider the .50 OD

I have seen a lot of your posts, and your opinions are complete and utter stupidity at times...

3.42s and a T56 = 1500-1600rpm or so in 6th at 60-65mph which is perfect for fuel economy.

If you are saying that because most people put too big a cam in thier car and 1500-1600rpm is unobtainable for a given combo, then state that, but your blanket statement is what is useless...

Hell, make enough torque and you don't *NEED* anything more than a 3.42. Or make enough HP and run whatever gear, even a 3.23 or 2.73, you want.

Sounded pretty straight forward to me. It looks as though it was an answer to a question. The subject is running the largest cam possible w/out a gear swap. Now I can say the same thing about this statement:
Hell, make enough torque and you don't *NEED* anything more than a 3.42. Or make enough HP and run whatever gear, even a 3.23 or 2.73, you want.
Extreme blanket statement and "useless" information. If you are wanting to putt around on the street then fine, but for 1/4mi performance you just can't run any gear and think it will perform well.

I don't even think about using 6th gear unless I'm doing 65+, and the backhalf of the 1/4 mile is a joke with 3.73's, it might touch 6k right at the traps. 4.11's would be a huge benefit in driveability and 1/4 mile performance in my mildish setup so I would have to agree gears would give a better gain over a bigger cam. And I don't think ~360rwtq at 3k is lacking lowend torque.

Trust me, you will notice quite a difference with the gears. Go at least 4.10s with the M6

1500 rpms cammed is lugging the engine. Hell that is no good for economy with a stock cam.

I have a bone stock wagon with 2.56s and the heavily modded sedan with 3.73s. Now granted the wagon is heavier, but these cars get within about 3mpg of eachother. The wagon actually gains fuel economy if I make more use of drive instead of OD. OD at 50-60mph is down too low in the rpm range, even with the lowend torque b-body cam, it drives fine but the ultra low rpms hurt economy.

LOTS of b-body guys report fuel mileage gains with a swap to 3.42s with the A4.

Forgot to add that if you want any chance of hooking up at eddyville you will need at least a 28x10.5-15 with that M6. 4.10 + 1-2 shift + eddyville track prep = lost race and a big burnout(with brand new 226x10.5-15 ET streets) in a stock engine and trans bolt on car......

With 4.10s though the tire rpm wont spike so much if traction does break loose, meaning easier to catch it and get going again.

it depends. heavier cars will not benefit at lower rpm especially if a driver keeps a constant overwhelming load on the engine which will cause the engine to work harder to maintain the same speed. drivers who are not vigilant to the changing terrain will easily waste fuel unless engine speed changed to copensate. basically the only way to run economically in 6th with a stock power/torque band is if it is on extremely flat terrain.

Did you install your 4:10s yourself?

4.10's + six speed+ good tires+ ANY power= one BROKE *** 10 bolt.

The pinion is too small in a 10 bolt, stay with the gear you have until you get a 12 bolt.

I have a hard time believing gears (at least any streetable gear) will make more of a difference than a cam with supporting mods, a good cam, not a baby jesus cam.
