I know a lot of guys here are the "lets go racing" guys....I used to be one as well, but I'm looking at the street motor side. Nothing like a 427+ cube mouse motor with 500+ lb. ft. to push a relatively "light" car around. Plus at 427, it still leaves plenty of room to go bigger down the road

VERY cool - was not expecting progress this soon!!! One BIG step to keeping up with the LSX guys. I can't wait to see what kind of heads come out of the woodwork next to feed these beasts. Kinda sucks that I am just finishing up the last few parts for my 383 though ...
If I had the cash I would be tempted to sell it and start over with this block, but to be honest I havent driven my car for almost a year and I just want it running again!
Procharged 427 "street car"? Maybe next build .

to answer your other question, if you got the 4.125 bore then add the 3.75 crank it would be a 400, the old original 400 SBC's ran that same combo.
if you bought a 396 shortblock you have a 3.875 crank, swap that into the new block witha little clearancing and you now have 414 CI's, but since you would need new pistons anyway why not increas the bore to 4.155 (420 CI) or maybe even 4.2 and have 430 CI's all using the same crank that came in your 396...

OK, so what is a 396 block? or was it a 396 shortblock you bought?

From the info I have seen on the dart board, you can take the block out to 4.200" and still have a lot of meat left .200" for support. Then you can EASILY clearance it a bit more for a 3.875" crank.
A 4.200" bore x a 3.875" crank comes to 429.xx inches or 7.0 liters.
I guess you CAN make it a 4.00" stroke but depending on your rod choice (most of them) you will HAVE to run a small base circle camshaft for clearance purposes.
