Default a4 lt1 will not shift

My buddy has a 95Z and has had the worst luck with the car. First it spun a rod bearing, after having a motor transplant the car just will not run right. It is a full bolt on car and just had the opti and water pump replaced along with the throttle positioning sensor. When he floors the car it will downshift into first gear and rev out 1st and continue to slam on the rev limiter. The kid wants the car just to run right so he can sell it. It only has 60,xxx miles but the car is the devil and he has had way too many problems with it. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated and i will pass it on to him. I tried searching but came up empty handed. Thanks in advance.

Tranny might just be taking a dump and not holding the clutches. You could always take the pan off and add a 1/4 turn to the force motor with the torx bit to boost the line pressure a bit. That would be a free fix if it worked. Does the fluid smell burned or dark or metal particles in it?Also make sure its full while running. Might help to change the tranny filter.

When driving it normal (not flooring it) will the car shift into gears or just stay in 1st? Could possibly be a bad "forward spragg." Mine took a dump shortly after I bought the car. It would shift from 1st to 2nd and stay there. Took it apart and the forward spragg had bit the dust.

The car shifts fine while driving it normal. But once it is under wot it will not shift.

Make sure the VSS signal is good. A cut or damaged VSS won't allow the transmission to shift outside of first gear.

bump for this... cuz my buddy has the same exact problem, at WOT rev limiter bangs a like 4200 and stays... this happens in all gears if he lets off for it to shift into the next gear... he also says that in texas heat, middle of the day it will go haywire and run perfect, but come night-time... back to bangin the rev limiter... i would have said some sort of crank sensor... but it works fine in the heat???
any suggestions?
P.S. tranny is freshly rebuilt with a nice shift kit...

This is not entirely true. Atleast for a cut/disconnected VSS, the transmission will go into "limp mode" and it will shift past 1st but it won't shift into OD/4th gear. The very first 1-2 shift will require 2500+ RPMs to get it into 2nd gear, but after that it will shift normal for the rest of a drive. Plus, at lights or when going WOT, your car will not downshift - it will just stay in the gear that it's currently in. Know this from firsthand experience.

Sounds like it needs a re-build..2nd Gear band is shot or the Servo is not applying to grab it.

he lets off of the trottle and it shifts... that applies to all gears... tranny is a fresh rebuild, and runs strong, im just trying to think what would give it a rev limiter of 4200 rpm... when it is cool outside... and in 100 deg weather it runs fine....... confusing.

if he lets off the throttle and lets it shift, it will bang the limiter at 4200 in all of the gears not just 1st... thats why im guessin it may be a pcm problem... or crank sensor maybe?

but it is hitting a low rpm limiter... if it was the kick down cable it would be wherever the factory limiter is not 4200...

A 1995 never had a kick-down cable.

Does he have Gears or any kind of a Tune? Will it go higher than 4200 if he isn't flooring it?

i was going to ask him the same question. Or out of gear, i was going to see if he could get it to rev any higher than 4200... (slow rev of course)
