Default Oil pump screen install

Hey guys I am having some trouble getting my oil pump screen into the oil pump. I got a loan a tool from autozone and the thing is to small. So does anyone know how to make a homemade tool with out welding something(i don't have a welder).Any tricks to do this. Was hoping to work on my 2 days off and with one day gone trying to get the new pump ready to install It looks like the car is going to sit for a few more weeks. What have you guys done in the past. As for the pump its a melling m155 and a melling pickup tube.

backyard mechanic way:

what i did was put the oil pump between my legs while kneeling down. then positioned the pickup tube where i wanted it in my left hand while holding a 3/4in wrench above that flared lip. i then hammered with my right hand on the wrench. it took a few good wacks for it to finally go in the pump. once i hammered it in about half way i made sure the tube was angled correctly. then hammered it all the way in.

I have also used the open end wrench + hammer on top of the rolled lip in lieu of the proper install tool. The big thing is to make sure you start it straight and true. It will not get started any other way. Once it is going in straight, it is a bit easier.

For future reference heating one part and cooling the other often works well for a LOT of different press fit things. In thios case you would have heated the oil pump base after removing the relief spring.
How much you heat something is a guessing game. If it is something I am worried about damaging or if it will be sliding into a seal while hot I boil it in water to limit heat to about 212f, put the other part in the freezer for an hour or two.

Never done it with an oil pump pickup but have with a lot of other parts.

Why is that? When using the correct install tool, you still have to hammer it on.

Mine fit barely snug. No beating needed.
I then welded the Hell out of it so it cant come off again.
