Non-vented opti on vented opti motor?
The optispark on my 94 caprice is starting to goto hell. This is after driving through water (couldnt avoid it). My friend has a nonvented opti. Could I use this? As far as I know all caprices/impalas used a vented opti (94-96).
If there is an issue is there anything I can do to fix this?

You cannot use a non-vented opti on an engine that takes a vented opti. The non-vented opti uses a splined shaft off the cam to drive it whereas the vented uses a longer dowel pin. Not possible.

its not the "vented" aspect that makes it not work.
The non-vented has a splined gear which is spun by the camshaft.
The vented has a notch on it where the dowel pin from the camshaft inserts into it and that is how the opti spins.
The non-vented will not and can not be altered to work as far as I know.
They operate COMPLETELY different. the picture on the left above is the vented and you can see the 3 notches...one holds the dowel pin. You can also see that there are no splines on the shaft.
The one on the right is a non-vented and you can NOT see any notches for a dowel pin, and you can see splines which is how it is turned by the cam.

Did that answer your question? Or are you talking about using the non-vented opti on the correct application, and just altering it to be a vented opti?
Just wanna clarify because it sounds to me like your asking if you can do this mod, and make a non-vented opti work on a vented car and if that is the case then no.
If you are talking about using a non-vented opti on a non-vented car and altering it to be a vented opti.........I am not sure if that can be done or not...

I would say no because you have to drill 2 holes./..one in the cap, and one in the opti...you risk REALLY messing something up...you can buy an MSD cap/rotor kit which will turn a non-vented into SOMEWHAT of a vented opti

I've seen it done before successfully. Its really just a tube with a check valve going to the intake elbow, then another going to the intake manifold.
The vent system is not rocket science, its the drive differences that make them incompatable. The MSD's 92-94 splined opti cap/rotor converts it to a vented style.
