Thumbs down A problem with my cylinder heads

I was cleaning up the heads to remove all the muck and crap on them, old oil sludge and what not.

Then I get to the combustion chambers. I clean #7 combustion chamber and guess what I find right at where the head gasket ring seats? A gouge! Its pretty deep, like 0.010"? Maybe even 0.015"! There is another right after it, but smaller and shallower.

I went back to my headgaskets and had a look, and yes, the ring was somehow warped.

I doubt I could have the heads shaved down that low, unless the gouges can be filled somehow and resurfaced?

What do you guys think could have caused this?

The funny thing is, I never felt like I was running on 7 cylinders, the car was always powerful, smooth and fast.

I will post a picture in a while.

This build will never be complete

If they are stock just have them milled down. Mine are milled .030 so youll be fine. If you ever have any head porting done make sure your porter knows so he doesnt take off more.

I will take them tomorrow morning to a workshop and see if they can repair them without milling, like just filling the pits and polishing it back down.

The only crazy thing is, its right at where the ring seats. I am baffled by how this happened, and I never felt any difference in performance either.

Probably a casting defect. If you do have them milled, make sure to get the intake done at the same time or you'll have sealing and bolt alignment issues.

Damage is above the exhaust valve?

What were you planning on filling it with, unless you're a great welder I wouldn't touch it.

You need to get those surfaced, I bet you were losing a little coolant before you took it apart. Do you run any anti-freeze in the motor?

Yes, its above the exhaust valve, and I ran the car on engine coolant. But I never had any white smoke come out the tail pipes.

I checked my cars fluids once a week and the coolant never changed lever, radiator was always full whenever I opened it.

I am taking it to the best engine machine shop in Bahrain to sort it out, and just resurface it and polish it back flush with the rest of the head.

I took it to a machine shop today, they fixed it within 10 minutes. An aluminum weld to fill up the gouge, and topped up the edges near the water passages because they went down a bit.

Then they filed it down carefully and at the very end, rubbed it flush with sand paper and its flush and straight as glass.

The head was checked for any warping, and its all good.

A 20$ fix, saved me getting another pair of heads.
