Default Double Roller Timing Chain.....

I have a '96 vette I'm putting a cam in. I want to install a Cloyes 3145 DR timing set. I have read of clearance issues with this chain on '95's. I'm changing the water pump to a Mezerie 55 gpm electric pump so the water pump drive will be removed. Do any of you know for sure whether or not the double roller will work on a '96 LT1 without clearance issues? Thanks

Yes you will have to clearance the timing chain cover.

Thanks,
Is this because of the reluctor ring for CPS? Can't I get the tune modified to do away with the CPS? Would that eliminate any clearance issues?

The chain will hit the cover casting near the water pump drive seal, so you'll need to grind that off. Minimal grinding and my 3146 worked fine.

You will also need to rid yourself of the long OBDII crank hub in favor of the shorter 93-95 crank hub, and delete the CPS (which can be tuned out) entirely. I recommend the 95 year timing cover for such a setup.

My car had a double roller on it and all it needed was a little clearancing on the timing cover. The CPS sensor and original hub were still used.

I suppose you can get away with it, but the longer hub will bottom out earlier on the thicker crank gear, pushing the pulley slightly out of alignment with the rest of the accessories.

Default Follow up..........

I got the chain on and it appears it does not hit the cover anywhere. I just bolted the cover on without the gasket to see if it hit. I will have to get a new shorter hub though because of the double roller gears. Where can I get a shorter hub? Any links?

Thanks to all for your input!

My first post mentioned the crank hub from the 93-95 year LT1 will fit. I'll snag you a part number when I get home from work.

Keep in mind the difference in hub length is very small, so it won't look like a huge difference.

obd II hub is shorter, isnt it?? obd II hub + ring should be the same length as the obd I hub, so if you dont have the ring on the obd II hub, its a little shorter... i put them side by side and thats what i got from them

On a 93 LT1 would I be able to do the same thing, I have a pre reluctor motor but I was looking into doing the double roller chain like the LT4 instead of the one chain on the LT1.

That's right. If he gets a 93-95 hub, the alignment will be even worse. Most of the DR crank gears are thicker than stock.

yeah so the obd II one (not using the ring) should bring the alignment closer to stock shouldnt it, since the thicker DR crank gear will make up some of the difference...

Exactally! The difference without the ring is slight. less than 1/8". I'm going to try and grind that off myself just to get it a little closer. The hub will not bottom out on the crank snout if it is not gound off. Have Ion tune out the CPS and plug the hole for it.

on my 95 short hub I had to shim out the acc brackets by 1/8in to keep everything aligned. I Used a diff brand though maybe thats why.

Got a little accomplished today. Installed a freeze plug in the timing cover to seal up the wp drive gear. Also put in new seals. Put the CPS sensor in to just seal up the hole. I'm having it tuned out. Removed the reluctor ring to aid in getting the hub in the correct position. Got the cover, hub, and damper installed. In the picture you can see it lines up very well with the idler. I ground off about 3/64 of an inch so it would bottom out on the crank snout and also hit the lower timing gear. The OE damper looks to be in excellent shape so I'm reusing it. I got the china wall dimpled to aid in stopping intake oil leaks. It's going back together slowly but surely.

So dimpling aids in sealing?

From what I understand it does. I've never tried it before. Makes sense I guess.
