The factory calls for 5w-30 when the car and engine were new. Its far from new anymore.
Dont worry about what the manual says about oil weight. I use 20w-50 in mine and have been for the last 6 years since I bought it. It doesnt get too cold down here though.

Ok the noise is back. I got under the car and I can hear it well where the transmission connects to the back of the engine. I cant hear it with my ear against the oil pan. Its also fairly loud at the passenger side valve cover.

Have to agree with you on that one. In my 91 z28 I had the converter bolts loosen up and let me tell you it sounded like the rods where about to come through the block...tightened them up and the noise was gone. So I say check the converter bolts to if its an auto.

How do you tighten the torque converter bolts? Are they just under the inspection cover?

Make sure you get all of them, you have to spin the engine to find all of the bolts which isnt always that easy to do. Make sure you have plenty of light to see what your doing.

20-50 is retarded. That 0-30 GC is good oil and as thick as most 40 weights. People need to di some damn research

Agreed. A 50w oil in an LT1 is IMO unecessarily thick.

Everybody sees 0w and assumes there is no weight to it...wrong! It is simply an empirical number. I run Amsoil 0w30 in my vehicles.

If none of these are the case, your oil is probably bad (i.e. coolant in the oil or poorly produced oil that is waaay too thin and waaay under spec which to be honest is EXTREMELY unlikely)... either that or you had some coincidental major engine failure that just happened to occur at the same time
the lifter on my 3.4l has a slight pecking always at idle now, could be that...it used to only do it for the first 10seconds on cold start
