Default Popular Hot Rodding Article...WOW!

Just curious if anyone else had seen the "LT1 Cam-O-Rama" article? I've seen plenty of cam/head swaps yield good results but I was very impressed at the last (#4) cam they used...500.4 hp! I was wondering how the Edelbrock LT4 kit would fare guess now I know.

That was crank HP so in a car youre looking at around 400 to 420 depending on drivetrain etc.

I would like to see a set of those heads in the hands of a good porter, but the initial price of them is so high !!!

What issue is that article in?

I just searched PHR's site and came up with nothing!

(LMK - If it's on the newsstands now, I'll go pick it up.)

I beleieve it's the newest on the stand? I didnt see the month but its in books a zillion now lol. 500.4 is gonna be more than 400-420 rwhp man. Your not gonna have a loss of 100hp through a t56 surely.

But yeah they're outrageously high. A buddy of mine picked up the AFR heads for the lt1, lt4 valve covers, lt4 roller rockers, and a cam (unsure of specs) for like 1600. I was hopelessly waiting to see her run but he got screwed because when it lit up the first time she was spitting dex cool out the ***. Anyone seen a stock bottom end lt1 with afrs, lt4 manifold, and 150 shot dyno?

The loss like i said is dependant on the drive trian, yeah with a t-56 and a 10 bolt you should lose less than 80 with an auto you will definately be seeing about 80 loss. But still nice numbers.

I still want to see these heads worked over good.

I have AFRs bought them new and the heads were around 1500 $ alone.

Oops left out one part...had been overhauled/stroked...377 and I think the comp. was 11.5/1 but I'm not sure...sorry guys that fucked it all up lol. But anyways...the first cam went 430, second I believe 450, then 470, and fourth made 500.4hp.

One "reputable" LT1 crate engine builder sells a 520hp motor known to put less than 390 to the wheels, his 440hp package puts under 330 to the wheels through an automatic.

You are getting excited about inflated flywheel numbers without comparing them to any known result.

Edelbrock's own testing on their packages has them making less at the flywheel than a good ported stock heads package makes at the wheel.

Tested as these magazines test I bet there are a fair number of over 500fwhp stock shortblock LT1s out there.

That's a 25% drive train loss...which through an automatic is probably very possible with the stock equipment. People should realize the difference between flywheel and rear wheel hp...GM rates most of their cars at flywheel hp anyway tho...so for most people 500fwhp means a 500hp car...

It all depends on how you wanna look at it...
To each his own I geuss...

Stock dual cat LT1 fbody's rated at 285hp, and most people get about 270rwhp threw T56 with 10 bolt.

They are slightly underrated and all year LT1s are really closer to 300hp...they are not very different from the higher rated vette LTXs after all.

the only real differences between them are the 4 bolt main in the corvette, along with the accessories bracket and a couple other miniscule things. The intake and exhaust are a little less restrictive, so that's how they figure. But we all know how much a CAI and a catback (especially as restrictive as the stock ones are on the vettes) is really worth...some, but not tons...

What I was trying to say is this might be 375hp at the tire.

Once you look at it like that, it is not so impressive. Not when one company can pretty reliably deliver 440rwhp 383 through an auto with less duration. That is ported stock castings not aftermarket.

Based on 25% losses there are a lot of 520fwhp heads/cam motors out there.

I believe some shops and magazines set the dynos up to be VERY generous. I do not believe that you would find a 25% loss on an honest independant dyno.

Well problem with that theory is dynos CORRECT for weather which is a LOT more complicated than elevation.

Discussions liike this just prove how ignorant most folks are.
