Default 93 formula, possible buy

93 formula, stick, 73K on body, approx. 58K on a motor swap, probably also from another 93 LT1. 1-2 shift grinds some, goes in smoother when its warmed up. everything is bone stock, asking $3500.

im looking at this for a possible road race project. im an LS1/carb guy, dont know much about LT1s. im always leery about getting the 1st gen of any new motor. i know the optis are always the weakest part, and the early LT1s are only OBDI.

are there any inherent problems with these cars/motors? how hard/expensive is it to get the synchro fixed? do early LT1s hold up well with basic bolt ons? most money will be spend on suspension and brakes, with basic intake/exhaust on the motor.

just looking for outside opinions on everything, including the price.

I think hes asking a little too much. I personally like 93's better. No MAF and non electronic autos. The year isnt the problem here though I think its the price.

IMHO (cause i own a 93 Lt1) the early motor doeas respond better to bolt ons. I gained 35 + rwhp with underdrive, CAI, Mail Order tune, 160* stat, TB Bypass and TB fiol. I ran 13.2 @ 103 on stock suspension. I know this doesnt sound loke much, buti was impress becasue i only had about $300 in mods.

The trans should not be too bad. I have a buddy here in DE selling a few t56's and he rebuilds them too.

Inherent problems with a 1993? -- the lack of a Vented Opti (can be changed to 95+ stlye witn a few mods or you can buy a MSD or similar w/ venting) The T56 trans has 2 differnet gear sets to go along with the 2 different rear gear sets. A few parts are 1992-1993 Lt1 specific (i know my Adj FPR was), so be carful when buying parts. If you do H/C/I you will need different rails if you dontuse a 92-92 intake and I THINK the cam is specific to 92-93 cause of the opti drive? There are some more sublties - Anyway here is a good link with more info on 92-93 LT1's

Good luck with the car!

Really? I dont think it is too bad considering the milage. A purist may argue it is not "numbers matching" but it is not a collectors car. Would need to see the condition of the body, interior, etc. My Camaro has 60K miles and is well above average in condition. I have had offers over $5000 for it.

if you have about 5k you can get a high mileage ls1 car which I would rather have than a low mileage lt1 car. the price is way too high for having tranny problems

quick KBB for price comparison:

http://www.kbb.com/KBB/UsedCars/Pric...uizConditions=

1993 Pontiac Firebird Formula Hatchback 2D
Condition - Value

Excellent - $4,235

Good - $3,860

Fair - $3,410

OK it may be a little high, but it is asking price and you could negotiate..

thanks for the help. i also checked out your mail, jaysz28. of course im going to try and get him down on the price. the entrance fee for the race im going into next year is VERY expensive, so id rather not blow 5K on an LS1, even though id obviously prefer it.

just have to see how low hes willing to go. ive got a few other cars in mind, mostly 3rd gens. much more cost effective, more so since i have a stock of parts left over from yet another project. as much as i like this car (its hardtop), its bone stock. which means ill have to buy a full exhaust, intake parts, plus suspension and brake stuff.

the other 3rd gen im looking at has a mildly built 350 carb, T5, exhaust, some other goodies. at the MOST, i wouldnt go over 3K for this particular project.

No Problem. Actually the buddy of mine with the transmissions is a pretty hardcore road racer himself. He has a 427 powered 3rd gen camaro.

Not worth it. Ask him 1500 or 2000. Expensive to rebuild a 6-spd

6 speeds are easy to rebuil and can be done yourself. otherwise its not more expensive than the 4l60e

Rebuilding a 6-speed isn't something your typical backyard mechanic can do themselves...
