Default Well, bought a used set of LT1 heads and got 561's!

I got them for a head cam swap on my iron headed '94 b-body. I didn't pay but $70.00 for them but still, from what I'm reading now the 561's suck for porting. I just wanted to clean them up, rebuild them, and loose the weight from the iron heads off the front end. We'll, I guess I could use them with just a mild port, or sell them and look for one of the other better castings. Either way, now I'm only out $70.00!

The difference between 561s and the other castings is minimal. A good porter can do wonders with either casting, so don't sweat it.

Cool, well I may use them anyway. I'll probably look at sending them to LE or AI for cleaning up and rebuild.

True^^^

The earlier castings are a little thicker, but the 561s can still be ported to flow quite well. I've got 561s on my car and it seems to be making decent power. Mine flow 271/191 @ .600

Well, there is hope then, I'll hold on to them. I had read they aren't as portable and flow less than the other casting LTx heads.

It's all bench racing really. AI won't port 561's because they don't fit their CNC program. LE ported my 561's and they flowed great. After I sold them to my96z for his build he clened them up and flowed them and they were pretty close to Colins. I had 2.02/1.60 valves in them so I'm sure that helped a little too.

I guess LE then. I'll brake them down completely, inspect them, and go from there.

If I were going to spend that kind of money I would get another set of heads. As well as the runners being thinner, which reduces performance potential, the decks are not as strong. N/A that will probably not be an issue, but if you ever decide to add boost it could cause head gasket issues.

Won't be any boost. Just a head and cam upgrade, and to get rid of the iron boat anchors. I'll keep and eye out for some of hte other castings too. Thanks Gizmo.

LE has a pair of 561s as we speak and willl be doing wonders with them and there is nothing really the matter with them compared to other heads. They will be just fine and you will love them.

Talked to LE this morning. He said for my goals that they will work fine and won't be a noticable loss of performance with my choice of cam and power plans. So, I'll go with his cam/ intake, and have him port my intake as well while he's got my stuff. I need to get the big car faster before next year and HRPT '09!

I have 561's on my car ported by Lloyd. My first and only time at the track so far I ran 11.80's in 90 degree weather on a mailorder tune. For those of us just wanting a nice heads/cam setup on the stock bottom end, the 561's aren't doing any harm.

Pretty sure the earlier models (93-95) got the more desirable castings.

Yep, 93-95s for the most part got the 643 & 374 castings which are the more "desirable" thicker castings. While 96-97s mostly came with the 561s.

While the earlier castings are more desirable for porting, the later 561s actually flow a slight bit better in factory un-ported form.

643s were stock on my 96 I still have them bone stock, as well as a pair of LE2 ported 643s on the car! Honestly I dont thing you are loosing much if any on a mild build.
