Default Noise in Opti?

I have put a new MSD cap and rotor on my Opti. I'm just getting ready to reinstall everything and noticed when I turn the rotor there is a friction spot inside. Is this ok or what did I do wrong. This is my first time having all this apart and nothing seems to be going right.

Hmmm....sound to me like you might have tweaked the wheel (not sure what to call it...it has tiny holes in it). The wheel rides through a slot in the optical sensor.

I did the same thing, although I stepped on the Opti. I didn't think I damaged it, until I installed it on the car. Doh!

When I disassembled it, I could see scraping marks 90 degrees around the circumference of the wheel. I had to buy a new Opti, as there was no way to flatten that piece again.

Two possible causes...

1.) The MSD kit comes with two o-rings, a square and a round one. You should be using the square one.

2.) When installing an MSD cap/rotor, if there is wear in the old bearings in the old optispark, it can cause lateral slack in the rotor and cause it to hit the cap. So, you might need a new opti altogether depending on bearing wear.

I used the original screws to put the rotor button on and they were too long with the MSD rotor. Put the shorter screws in that came with the kit and no noise.

Although a new cap and rotor kit did not fix my problem. This has been going on for 2mos now and this is where I"m at-It used to have spark, just ran bad and got increasingly worse to where now I have no spark at all. Here is what I have replaced;

Fuel filters, fuel pump, spark plug wires, fuel pump relay, injectors, cap and rotor. The first couple times I cleaned/replaced the injectors it started running perfect, then would head down hill. I guess I'll be replaceing the opti and hope for the best. I would hate to throw a built 302 in it but I could have done it alot quicker than replacing all this stuff!

There's my advice.

Replaced the opti and got it to fire and run after about the 10th try before I put the water pump and all the other bs on. Got everything back together and now it won't run I have spark and fuel. It fired and ran while I was checking the spark on a wire. It will occasionally stutter and puff a cloud of smoke out of the air filter while trying to start.

Being a custom application I dread taking it to a local mechanic basing his "labor" and costs off of that. I want to believe that this is something simple I may be over looking. I'm well over what I originally paid for the engine/computer and harness. I have ALOT of money into this engine now for anything more than it is.

Thanks for any help!
