Default Idle Problems

I recently replaced the alternator on my Z. When I pull up to a stop sign and put it in neutral it barely idles @500rpms and sometimes dies. The idle is set @ 850. When I first start it there are no idle issues of any sort. Only when I'm stopping, I can also see my voltage gauge drop drastically when this happens. Could this be a symptom of a bad battery? If so why would it still be able to start? Does my PCM need to be reflashed? I'm pretty confused at this point and any help would be appreciated.

All alternators are not the same. They can look the same on the outside but be different inside.Case in point, roadmaster, impala and caprice GM 140 amp alternators look and fit all three cars but some have different voltage regulators and will cause problems if installed on the wrong car.Where did you get yours?

Could need to reset the IAC since the car was off for a while for the alternator change?

Might wanna reset it like this. http://shbox.com/1/4th_gen_tech2.html#iac_reset

Check the TPS? Maybe its dirty as fck like mine was and is having trouble finding idle, my last idle problem was fixed by cleaning that.

Also like ohio says, could be the alternator. There's a few things it could be, first thought is the alternator though. Just throwin ideas out there, good luck.

Its a 140amp Ultimate from Oreillys. I figured what the hell since it had a lifetime warranty.

I havent attempted to reset IAC yet, but I'll be sure to try it soon. Thanks for the tip. I had the battery disconnected all day.

I used a toothbrush and the seafoam deep creep throttle body cleaner. You can get deep creep at advance or autozone I believe.

I reset the IAC again, but this time I let it run for about 10 minutes. That seemed to cure the problem. Thanks for the info... now I just need to find a good deal on Bilstein shocks. I have a feeling mine are original, my Z rides like a lumberwagon
