Default Oil Pressure Gauge Maxed Out

Happy Thanksgiving LS1TECH Family! Hope everyone had a safe one.

May I borrow some brains for what I assume will be a easy question.

I am running a Vortech S-Trim Supercharger on my 383 Stroker LT1. For the oil pump, I upgraded and installed a Melling High volume oil pump with the Canton Screen since I have the Canton 6 qt Pan. I am running the oil feed for the supercharger from the small fitting above the factory oil filter location and it drains to a tap in the oil pan. Everything runs smooth and I am not having any problems with getting the engine to run.

My question is in regards to the oil pressure gauge. I understand the Melling pump will increase the volume/pressure of the oil flow through the motor, but the gauge is always pegged out. Is this expected, and if not where am I going wrong? I my gauge acting faulty? Should I run a secondary Oil Pressure Gauge that acturatly shows the ranges the melling offers?

Any info you have to add would be apreciated. Thanks again and Happy Holidays!

The sensor may be faulty (on the back of the block). Does the needle move at all? Or is it ALWAYS pegged and stationary?

It's always pegged. Good call on the sensor.

I believe if the wires to the sensor get grounded the gage will peg

All good points, ill check them after turkey. Just curious though, what should the pressure be at idle with the melling?

I have seen melling pumps push oil pressure to the far right.
But if it's not moving once the motor warms up, it's very likely to be a sensor or wiring issue.

If you have a laptop and datalog cable, you can check to see what values it's putting out.

Did this just start all of a sudden, or has it been that way since something changed?

Ever since the motor swap. only have about 20 cranks on the motor and since it has a mechanical pump i'm not to worried. But still it's nothing I just want to blow off. I'm not looking forward to digging my way back there and inspecting it though.

Pressure sensor is easy to get to.
On 93s, it's just above the oil filter.
On 94-97 it's on the top/rear of the block hanging on a 90* elbow.

Just don't fire the car up with the sensor out of the hole LOL .... Makes a nice mess.

You could always pull a valve cover to see if oil is flowing when you crank.
If it's really at 70+ PSI (like mine is) there's enough pressure to squirt oil up over the fender LOL

Well, I looked things over tonight and as far as I can tell the wires dont seem to be in any kind of pinch. But I made one additional observation. The oil pressure gauge in the car doesn't seem to ever come back down. Like it's stuck in that position. Its all the way sprung. The highest point on the gauge is at the 12 o'clock position and the needle is stuck in the 11 o'clock position. This stays when the engine is cranked, when the key is engaged, and when the engine is running. Any idea how I can re-seat the needle in the home position? Thanks again for all the help.

I would agree, but it worked without any problems before the motor swap.

Entirely possible that you damaged the pigtail or the sensor during the install.
The sensor itself is a $25 part.

It is VERY common to bump the oil pressure sensor on the transmission tunnel upon reinsertion of the motor, and it breaks very easily. I broke mine putting my new motor back in.

12 oclock and maxed are entirely different - 12 oclock is half way. Is it maxed out or 12 oclock?

D'oh - good point. I've only had an LT1 with a 1997 cluster so I was only thinking about that. Googled the 93-96 LT1 cluster and see 12 oclock is maxed.
