Security light on. Now what?????
I have a 95 Z and have been driving every day with no problems like this before. I drove it home last night and did not notice anything different. Today I get in to start it and the security light is on. I tried moving the key in the ignition and still nothing. I unplugged the battery to try it agian and it did the same thing. The key is not loose in the ignition and the metal key fob looks in good condition still.
My question is what causes this? Is it the key? Is it the ignition? or could it be in the computer? Can I tune out or delete the vats in the computer so this doesnt happen again?
Thanks for the help guys and have a Happy Thanksgiving.

even if your key is not "loose" in the key tumbler, the contacts that touch the key or the wiring that passes the voltage, or the BCM/VATS module that interprets the voltages could be faulty. Hopefully when you make a few checks it will just be a loose wire or something. You cannot just tune out VATS to correct the problem. You'll still have to put in the correct resistor under your dash to make the system think the correct key is there all the time. And then, thats only good if your module(s) aren't on the fritz.

if the car doesn't start look at the (2) two 22ga. wires running at the bottom of the steering column......it's a little thing nobody looks at but the wires have a tendency to break.....
Thanks for the help guys but now it runs???????? I cleaned the key and cleaned the ignition with a q tip hooked the battery back up and nothing. So I left the key on and let it cycle after 3 mins. Light turned off. I turned the key to start and nothing, I turned the key back off and back to start and now it runs. No light, no problem at all.
So it must be the key than right? It doesnt look bad and it fits in the ignition good but thats all I can think of?
How much is it to get a key from the dealer? Do I need to take the whole car to them or just the key?

If the computer thinks you tried to put a different key in the ignition it will go into "security" mode for like 5-10 minutes and won't let you start your car. This can happen if your key is dirty or damaged at all.
