Default 383 Head Choices...

I'm building a NA 383 setup... the CR should be around 10.8:1 - 11:1 w/ 60cc head. I'm running a custom ground cam 238/242 duration, .600" lift w/ 1.6. I'd like to put down 430 - 450+ rwhp. I've heard/read good things regarding the Trickflows & AFRs. Also, another option could be a set of stock ported heads from a local builder known to flow 275+ cfm & 175-180cc, which I'd essentially be paying for only machining. For the aftermarket heads, what would be the best volume size for my setup-- 195?

Any recommendations, pros, cons, feedback etc would be appreciated. Thanks.

AI 200cc ported stock LT1 castings.........will support >500rwhp NA.
My money would be on them outperforming all of the 3 options you mentioned.

If you are building an exclusively N/A motor, 11.1 compression is way too low. Shoot for something around the 12.5 range.

I too second the AI 200cc heads (ported stock castings). They have proven themselves time and time again. See sig for a similar setup.

the SCR he stated is with a 60cc head, 54-52cc head should put him closer to that goal, but like ramair said 12.5 or as close as you can.

if you're looking for 430-450rwhp a stock casting is gonna be pretty hard to get there but it has been done before, AI and LE both proven performers. don't even waste money on aftermarket castings imo unless you plan on dropping the extra coin to have them ported.

Although I agree with all the other points you make, I couldn't disagree with this one more. 430-450 rwhp (even behind an A4) is easy territory for a stroker, and also easily achievable with a solid roller 350/355, with nothing more than GOOD ported stock castings. If you're not there, it's a case of mismatched parts or a less than ideal motor build; it's not the heads' fault.

I wasn't trying to say it wasn't acheivable but it's not exactly common place as I've seen some AI/LE headed guys hit it before (strictly speaking HR). but it seems like this guy already has his whole build ready outside of the heads, and as I'm sure you know a cylinder head is only a part of the equation.

basically the point I'm trying to make is a cookie cutter build (off the shelf cam, basic head porting, mail order tune, etc. which is quite the common place on this forum) will be hard pressed to make that number, so a quality well thought-out one is the only chance IMO. to get that kind of power you'll want a head flowing close to 300cfm and the AI 200cc's last I checked were around mid-high 290's which should put you somewhere in that goal all parts complimenting

Some good points made here, but do we even know what trans will be behind this 383. Might make it a little easier to determine if he can reach his goals.

Another vote for Advanced Induction, Look at the performance bowtienut and I are getting from their heads/cam. That should tell you a lot.

If we are talking a 6sp then ported stockers from AI or LE can get the job done.

Through an auto I would start looking towards ported aftermarket castings. No matter what you hear 450rwhp through a stalled auto on ported stockers is far from common, and a bigger head will make it easier for you.

The engine builder I know that specializes in LT1's has no problem routinely producing 450rwhp NA through an A4. He's using AI's 200cc Dominator heads (ported LT1 castings) for all of his NA builds unless the customer specifies otherwiswe His own solid roller 383 puts down over 500 rwhp with those heads. He put my heads/cam motor together and it put down 425 SAE rwhp through an A4.
Maybe I'm just biased and spoiled to have a good builder nearby, but it's hard to settle for less once you know better

Not worth turning the thread to ****, but lets just say I've heard of a lot more NA 450 rwhp stalled auto LTXs then I have seen.

I'm glad you found a good LT1 builder since they are few and far between, and your car seems to run ok for what it is .

Didn't mean to do that. I just see that the OP looks to be a new member here, and trying to let him know that his goals are well within reach without going overboard on head costs. The Trickflows and AFR's he mentions won't do it unless they're competently ported. There are many ways to skin this cat; I'm just sharing ONE of the proven ways.
The recommendation(s) on bumping the CR are good ones. About 11.5 with a tight quench, his cam, and it will be good for pump gas.

If you got the money go with AFR as I love em' on my car and had em' since 98'. If your looking for a good race application, then take em' to Lloyd and have him port them a little and clean them up, but AFR's flow pretty damn good out of the box.

Oh you didn't at all - those were all great suggestions and the AFR 200 kit is a killer proven performer. I just didn't want myself to get too off topic since these threads often spiral into uselessness on this forum .

Guys,

This is the type of information I was looking for... for the record, and for the time-being, I'll be running a T-5 behind the LT1. *evil laugh*

Rebuilt I hope? Why so? It won't last long if it's a stock tranny.

Thankfully, my car is fairly light for a 3rd gen... (3100 lbs w/o driver). So, the T-5 should last with conservative driving until I can replace it with something better.
