I was the biggest LT1 ***** for years. Built 3 LT1's. They were a lot of fun, and the most power I made was with the 383 I built, stock heads, custom cam.. Made 385rwhp and something like 440rwtq. It was a mild build. All of them were mild actually and they were a lot of fun due to keeping the bottom-end torque there.
Now Im living in the world of GenIII+ and I can honestly say that I am no longer an LTx *****. Im making 430rwhp with bolt-ons and one of my shop grinds. Im pulling 6" of vacuum at redline and am probably looking at picking up another 20rwhp from a set of stock LS6 heads and another 20 from a Fast 90/90 combo.
470rwhp, anyway you look at it is fun. I may miss my LT1 from time to time, but hell... All I have to do is go drive the new car around and I feel satisfied.
I gotta hand it to you die-hard LT1 guys though. You are all still holding it down and building some FAST cars still.

A 400 RWHP cam only LT1 really shouldn't be that hard if you play by the same rules as the LS1 guys (fly cut pistons, big cam, etc.). I think it would be hard with the 306. Synthetic lubricants at low levels, ice, etc. will get you a better number if that is what you are interrested in. No reason why you shouldn't chase your goal. With hard work you might surprise a few people!

heads- ported LT1 heads flow just as much if not more than ported 241's or the like.
my LT1 is making 425-430rwhp through a 9" rearend, th400, and 28" slicks..... and it pulls 12-13" vacuum at an idle. not a very aggressive off the shelf cam. stock shortblock with ported heads.
this thing would be making 460-470rwhp with a t56 and a 10 bolt.

im assuming that 383 LT1 you had a truck cam, and your current LS1 has a massive cam. also a 383 is choking badly with stock heads if you are trying to get a high peak hp #. its not like you cant get power out of an LT1, its just that you were doing it wrong.

It was a good, well balanced motor. I miss that thing. It was a lot of fun.

and no, im not biased, i have an LS1 camaro also with big cam and stock 243's.

As mentioned, Gizmo is the one that should be talking to, there's alot to learn from this man.

There are just some things you can't get rid of. I will pride myself on owning both my LT1 and an LSx Corvette after I'm done with college Too bad I'm not making good power... yet

HAHA.. Its not that I was doing it wrong. I got the exact results out of it that I wanted. On full road-race suspension and street tire it went 12's in the quarter. It was a great street machine. Pulled like a freight train through the entire powerband.
It was a good, well balanced motor. I miss that thing. It was a lot of fun.

My car ran mid twelves on a street tire cam only with just the hotcam, and low twelves on a slick on bone stock suspension.
