Default Kooks LT Owners.......

Any fitment issues with the longtubes and Y pipe?

I read somewhere that the oil cooler needed to be removed. I talked to Tony at Kooks and he said no and sent along the instructions. Nothing in there either. My car is a 93 and I heard the newer version of the oil cooler is a cheaper version?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Tony

My car is a 97, I did not have an oil cooler. No problems at all with headers or y pipe. The fit was great!

The later version is alot taller than the eariler Modine unit, so I can see where it would cause some interference problems. The later version is also pretty much throw away if you ever loose a bearing or have an intermix problem, because it is nearly impossible to clean out.

Mine fit perfect in my 96Z. Didn't have an oil cooler either.

I think it's pretty widely known that the oil coolers have to be removed with Kooks headers. I didn't personally try to get my headers to fit with the cooler on the car. I removed it based on the experience of others. I had the earlier designed oil cooler, which isn't as tall as those on the post 94's. Personally, I don't think there is any way it would fit, even with a short filter. You could always try it and see what happens.

I'm not sure how much the oil cooler offers on these cars. Most people seem to think it's more of a way to warm the oil up a little faster upon start up. My car had sat for several years when I was installing my headers. After I had changed all of the filters & fluids, and got the car running post storage, my oil pressure dropped to around 20psi and just sat there. I think something somewhere was plugged. When I removed the oil cooler, my oil pressure improved dramatically. But I also put another new filter on the car at the same time, so it could have been a combination of things contributing to my low oil pressure.

There was no way the oil filter would fit on my 94Z with the oil cooler. I took it off and had to get the shortest filter that would go on. There is about 1in of clearance between the bottom of the filter and the primaries.

If I may Interject here if your car is running the factory oil Cooler on early 94 cars and definitely the 93 the oil cooler needs to be removed and a shorter filter needs to be installed. I will address this with Tony now he may not have understood the question. Sorry for the confusion. George R

Oh geez.......don't get him in trouble now! He was very helpful on the phone! I might have not understood his answer. As I look through the instructions again, it does say for some years, oil coolers will need to be removed so I missed that.

Anyhow, thanks so much for the clarification. My car is miles from me and a friend is doing the work. I just want to make sure if I order a set, he hits as few snags as possible putting things together.

Is the oil cooler on 95's and up relocated or something that would allow it to be retained with Kooks headers?
