Default Guy's running a 160 t-stat in here please

Does your car blow heat in the winter? My car has a 160 t-stat, and the fans come on at 175 and 185. Car blows no heat at all. Im thinking my heater core is shot.

sounds like your tstat is stuck open. if you sit and idle for a long time does it get hotter then cool down when you start moving again?

I dont think its just the t-stat, cause the temp guage reads about 2 needles under half and stays there for the most part. And no matter how long or far I drive, or it sits idling, it dont throw any heat. Im gunna get both a new thermostat and heater core tomorrow, and ill start with the easiest (t-stat) and go from there.

Heater core is probably clogged with gunk, disconnect it and blow it clean with a garden hose.
It's a pretty common issue.

My 160 thermostat sucked for the winter, but it should still blow heat even with the 160 thermostat unless you're in a really freezing place. I live in western washinton so during winter it hovers around 32F december and january. I put my 180 thermostat in when I finished my new motor because I knew how cold it would be. It's easy to switch back to the 160 when spring rolls around.

Before you go tearing things apart.... have you checked you antifreeze? Once that gets lower then normal (even if your temp gauge isn't getting to hot) it will not get your heater hot. A friend had that problem in his Tahoe and was telling me his truck never overheated but the heater wouldn't get hot and I checked the radiator and it was lowish. We filled it up and filled up the overflow to recommended levels and the heat worked great. I have a 160 in my Z28 and my heat is fine (well ok for a 160). It's free and worth a shot.

i have a 160 and you should def. swap it out for the winter. it absolutely sucks for winter use. its about 25 degrees here in chicago and i start my car up everyday let it warm up etc etc and the heat just blows ***. my needle might only go up 1/8-1/4 up. if your going to be driving the car all winter than swap it back to the stock for winter. i dont drive mine in the winter so im not changing mine.

Mine never worked right since I got the car. I put a 160* in and still blows pretty cold, unless it's like 50+* out.

Fortunately, I'm fat and can stand the cold haha.

I switch mine back and forth, We dont get much of a winter here in the Houston area but in December i always put the 180 back in and tune the fans to come on a little later. And for 94maro, if its cold outside your motor will be cooler

It has been pretty 4kin cold here this winter so I have been paying close attention. The heat comes out nice and strong as soon as the temp gauge hits the first mark past full cold on my 93. Sounds like you have a clogged core or are running low on antifreeze, as have been mentioned. A 160 thermostat is plenty warm enough for the heater to work (but not hot enough to keep the oil clean).

I have a 160 but also live in phoenix where its rarely ever needed. Although when I was living up in seattle it seemed to work ok. Of course not as good as the stock one! I think your problem lies elsewhere.
