I was wondering this earlier today. I would also like to know. It would be much easier for me to swap in a 700r4 in my M6

Most of the ones I have seen have the 700r4 and the lt1 4l60 listed as the same.

lol! Not sure what Im gonna do yet. Also not sure how long the M6 will survive with my plans and rebuilds are crazy expensive if you beef it up.

Since the 700 isnt electronic it would be easier to swap it in and legal if I decide to run Ex PA at the shootout.

700R4 trans input shaft changed spline count somewhere around 1985, so 700R4 converters from about 1986 and up are the same as for 4L60 and 4L60E.

No offense I don't see a 4L60/E/700R4 holding up in an 8 sec. car. Hell we put one in a 9 sec car and it kept chewing them up. That's when the TH350 stepped in and whatta know, no issues since. I'm not saying it can't be done, just not likely.

Hell when I redid the trans in my 90 it could hold a lot more than what I was pushing......to bad I never got to find the limits. I guess it's time to do another one and see what she holds up to

Nothing beats building a trans yourself

That's what I was alluding to in post #8 above. Thanks for refreshing my memory
One correction though.....ALL 4L60Es, as well as all 4L60's, are 30 spline.
700R4's made the switch from 27 to 30 spline somewhere in mid/late '85 to early '96, depending on the vehicle. I have an '86 Firebird and it came with the 30 spline 700R4.

Do all 700s have the same gearing? So if I get one out of a truck would it be the same as a F-body?

Yes, they have the same gear ratios. robsquikz has been given some wrong info. 2nd gear in 4L60 and 4L60E is 1.62X, same as 700R4.

FWIW you can now get a planetary set that drops the first gear ration down a little, relieving the huge first to second RPM drop. It actually gives the trans the same gear ratios as a F*** AOD. The planetary setup is pricey though as last I saw was around a G note.

There are options as to what can be done with it, but IMO if you're looking for a mostly strip car, go with a TH350. Light and plentiful. If you're dead set on having 4 gears, then you may want to consider just running a 700/4L60 with a TV cable and a non-lockup converter. If you're going to cruise it.....plan on a healthy chunk of change to get it to survive......Last one I worked with didn't handle 525rwhp for sh*t.

I say 350, rev. manual valve body and a brake, then put a big stall in it and watch the front end reach for the sky..... just my $.02 tho. If you're really interested in sourceing parts yourself, let me know, I've got a decent connection over in Addison.

700r4, you can take a 700r4 have over drive deleted and run it just like a th350, and only weigh a little more than an actual th350 plus unless they tear it apart no one will ever know

Quick Reply: 700R4 and 4L60e same torque converter???
