Default Electric Water Pumps

What are the steps to installing an electric water pump on a 92-94 LT1. Is this a worthy mod? How much power would be gained from this? I just might be interested in getting one...

Remove the cam gear that drives the water pump. Plug the hole in timing cover,
plug the hole in the back of the water pump with a freeze out plug, remove the front cover off the stock water pump. Bolt the new water pump to the front of the housing, hook up the power and ground with a relay. Good for 8-10 HP and cooler engine temps!

I have mixed feelings about my ewp. Pros for me is that it keeps my car much cooler and can cool the engine when it is not running.

However, mine has failed on me twice. 1st time the inline fuse that came with the relay kit is very poor quality and has bad connections. Within a month the fuse (old glass tube type) was not completing the connection on the ends. Second time was sorta my fault, the electrical connector just came apart randomly. I should've taped it to be safe.

Overall, in my opinion, the ewp is not worth the extra stress it puts on me. I'm constantly watching the guage and am painfully aware everytime the needle climbs, even under normal warming up. If your normal waterpump fails and you want the extra horsepower, then I would consider an ewp. Otherwise it is not worth the hassle of changing out a perfectly good mech wp just to go to electric.

For those who take the time to install it with quality fuse-holders and secured wiring, the EWP is a very good modification.

It should be noted that you don't NEED to remove the water pump drive gear - it can be left in the timing cover (although taking it out is best). You can also run the pump while the engine is off (good for between runs at the strip).

It comes with the freeze plug for the water pump, but not the timing cover. You can find a freeze plug from the parts store for the timing cover (or find another way to plug it if need be).

The wiring harness is something you can do yourself (if you're savvy with relays and such). If you need to though, you can order a pre-cut harness. Plenty of site vendors carry it.

Do the water pump have to be removed for installation?

Yes it does. You need to remove the bearing/impeller assembly from the stock housing.

10 minutes is being a little ambitious, don't you think?

I was thinking of going with one so i can run a double roller chain. Do they clear the fans in the F body cars?

The Meziere requires slight trimming of the fan shroud, while the CSI requires slight notching of the water pump housing.

Thread Hijack.

Can the HD waterpump still fit with just some trimming?

10 min.

Great mod. I basically overhauled my entire cooling system (fan switch, 160* stat, silicon hoses, new radiator, and the EWP) definitely makes a difference at the track in the staging lanes - no more hot laps!

How is this done? I did some research and saw that you need a hyd. press in order to remove this.

Maybe you haven't done enough research then.

A hammer and a punch is really all you need. It takes a few good whacks but it will come out.

I agree with the MEZ HD recommendation. My MEZ HD has been keeping my DD cool for a couple of years now. Only hiccup was with a Painless wiring relay failure. But I was only off the road for a couple of minutes. If you know your car you will instantly notice if/when the pump is off.

In summary MEZ HD will keep your car cool in Louisiana heat even while sitting on the 10.

Besides cooler temps in traffic the ability to use inexpensive double roller timing sets is an added benefit.
Mike
