Default Oil Pump Pickup Retainer

Has anyone used the oil pump pickup retainer from Jegs? Here is a link http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/23621/10002/-1

Wouldn't this be better than brazing? Let me know your thoughts.

What did you use to weld the cast iron?

ive always welded my pickups on.. ive used mig welders with mild steel wire and i've also used a tig welder with er70s (i think) filler rod..

the oil pumps must be cast steel.. be
cause cast iron would get brittle/crystalize.

Could welding damage the pump by creating too much heat? Thanks, I meant cast steel.

Hi Team,

Stripped the stock bolt for the pickup, -
broke second bolt head off-
broke third bolt head off-
broke extractor in third bolt :-(

So, I'm not taking out that bolt. Either I weld the pick up to the pump or buy a new pump. Never welded anything before, so I'll learn with this and a cheap Harbor Freight welder.

Question: Will the welding effect the rubber o-ring at the end of the pick up?

Edit: It's actually an LS1 but this thread is perfect.

Hi Team,

Don't know if I'm a retard yet, but I will admit that I am new to this whole piston game.

The description on the Jegs site says SBC 93-99 (LT & LS series). So I bought what was linked in the first post thinking they meant LS1.
Yep, faaaar from fitting the LS1. Not sure about an LT1.

So I bent it up and mounted it to the windage tray. Not sure how this will effect the worst case senario of the pick up falling out of the pump. Obviously I am hoping it will do. I also welded (holy cows, if you can call it welding) the pick up to the pump and added a bolt and washer on the other side of the pumps unused hole. This is what the correct application is and the next pic is what mine looks like.

Still unsure of how warped the o-ring is from the welding :-(

I filled the pick up tube with oil and let it seep down to prime the pump.

Oil slowly came out of the pick up - to - pump seam :-( If oil comes out, air will go in.
I am assuming that I heated the o-ring too much with my awesome welding skills and warped it.

Just got a reluctant approval from the boss to order a KaTech C5-R pump and be done with it.

I weld the living **** out of mine now. A couple of tack welds failed recently.
I take no chances.

If you weld it just take the spring out of the pump. the heat can cause it to loose some spring rate if it gets too hot.
