Exclamation So....i have a slight problem...

the bolt tha secures the hub to the crank, is.....how can i say... mangled! it took me about 10 minutes to get the bolt out of the crank! my arm is practically throbing, i had to use a cheater bar if that says anything! i guess the person that put it on before i bought the engine crossed the threads when they put on the balancer hub, ill get pics tomorrow so youcan see.

so whats the best and cheapest way to fix this? machine shop?

Sounds rough man. The haynes manual probably says the size of the crank bolt.

easiest way to fix it is to buy a new hub straight from GM for around $80.

if the bolt is super shot and you cant measure a spot with decent threads..go to the auto parts store and get a new one..but jus take a pair of calibers and see what size it is then go to you tap/chaser set and find the matching one and have at it..use some grease to keep the shavings on the taps also

Just to add to this use a pitch gage so you get the right thread spacing as well.

A decent machine shop should be able to drill out the damaged thread, and make you a new thread for either:-

A. A slightly larger bolt.
B. An insert repair to reuse a factory sized bolt.

the bolt is beyond repair, and there are flat spots inside the snout where threads used to be lol

i would just go with a larger bolt with a more coarse thread pitch myself, but idk yet, time to go to the hardware store!

thanks for your suggestions fellas!

mine was 7/16x20, i could not get the factory bolt to pull tight, even a new one which i have laying around. it was 2.25 inches long and i couldnt get it to work, so i bought a 2.5 inch one from lowes and its tight as can be. hope this helps

ewwyy that is pretty nasty. I had the same problem when I did my cam swap, I was a dumbass and tried to pull the crank hub on with the bolt and that was the worst idea I ever had. I ruined the bolt, and also slightly f*cked up the threads in the crank snout. I went to a specialty metal shop and had a 7/16x20 hardened rod made for me and I just cut it to length and used 2 washers and a hardened bolt, and that bitch isn't going anywhere

The factory crank bolt is 7/16-20x2 1/4". You will have a heck of a time finding that bolt in grade 8. I had to get one from GM.

Like others have said, you can have a shop drill and helicoil the crank for a new bolt.
