Default Drivers side grounds

Hi all,

So I just put a new forged 355 in my t/a and I am trying to crank it for the first time today. I got it to the point where the starter will turn over once or twice but it quickly loses power (even while being charged). I then noticed that the drivers side copper ground wire from my ignition coil was getting hot and literally pulling itself towards my msd ignition coil. I have this wire grounded to the frame with two other grounds. Not quite sure where to go from here, does this copper wire need a separate ground?

I have attached a picture to help explain, the question marks indicate where there is some uncertainty as I have the shared ground location secured as in the picture.

Take a pic of your car..that will help..

I have 2 things bolted to the Frame Rail in that area..the Grounding Strap, and the Fans Ground, both sharing the same grounding point.

I added my own ground strap made of 1" braid, just to be safe (coming from the same area grounded to the frame rail). You can see it in the same area:

X2, mine has a stock ground to the block in that same location, then going to the frame! The ICM's are year specific too....

RamAir95TA,

That looks interesting but where do you have the brown/copper ground going to from the ignition coil?

I will take some pics of mine shortly.

Pretty sure it's going to the stock location on the stud. I don't recall right off the bat and I can't go look because it's pouring outside.

If your ground strap is becoming hot, then there's obviously some kind of resistance there. Perhaps the terminals need to be wire-brushed and cleaned up a bit.

I have the stock 1" braided Strap going from the lower Alt. Bolt to the drivers side Frame Rail, and on the pass. side I have about 1ft of 6ga Cable going from the AC mount on the Block to the Frame Rail where the stock Heater Hoses bolted into. All of it a bare metal to bare metal.

That just goes into the wiring harness from and it is associated with the negative battery terminal.

The ECM has a crimp connector. I would solder heat shrink that conn. before that becomes a problem? Also , why are'nt you using your ground stud under the coil, I think I have three or four grounds to there?

The question mark thing in you first picture is the intake silencer.

... I was referencing the copper ground strap, the question mark indicated that I did not know where it was connected.

Where is your main battery cable ground that is supposed to go to the stud on the motor mount (where you have your PCM ground, instead)?

That's why your braided ground is getting hot. It's carrying all the ground potential from the frame to the engine. Get that ground on there.

Actually Shoe, There are two ground studs on the pass. side block! The Batt. ground is on the foward stud and another one next to the knock sensor.

This post takes me back to an earlier theory of haveing two seperate grounds on the vehicle. Further eliminating ignition interferance "noise"!

DOH! I saw that on my car just before your post, I had the battery power cables run all funky and I didn't even notice I was missing the ground! It looks like I will have to switch the two lower motor mount bracket bolts because I have the stud on the back and it looks like it should be on the front.
