Hmmm when I did my H/C years ago I don't remember there being anything else holding it on to there. It could be just stuck on the spline that turns it.

Wow that's some crazy oil and dirt build up.

There's also a bolt right behind the power steering pump pulley.

I thought the same thing when I did this, look closely at the very outer edges of the WP. There are 6 total bolts, the last two are the hardest to get to. Good luck.

You will have to take off the air pump and the air pump bracket to get the one on the right and use a deep well 9/16 socket. For the one on the left behind the PS pulley, you can get it with a shallow 9/16 socket and short extension.

In case you can't figure it out, put the socket through the PS pulley to access the middle bolt on the left.

A short 9/16 socket and a universal joint, along with a short extension will access the bolt on the left hand side.

On the right hand side, the lower bolt will drain some water from the block when you remove it (unless you drain the block first from the plug on the side of the engine). Might be a good idea just to put a tiny dab of RTV under the bolt head to help seal it up.

And make sure you clean up the block surface from the old gaskets so you can have a nice good seal.

in reference to ADM's post I'd use more then a dab of rtv under the head coat all the threads(all 6 bolts) with it I personally use permatex #2 formagasket for stuff like that and it works great. Anytime a bolt goes into a water jacket its a must to seal the threads real good

The bolts penetrate the water jacket, so thread sealant on the threads (not under the bolt heads) is needed. You do not want to use RTV on the threads.

I used Toyota RTV gasket maker (same RTV I used under the heads of the small bolts that penetrate the water jacket) and it worked great, I put it under all 6 bolt heads. Sourcing thread sealant is almost impossible here so we improvise with ways that have been proven to work for many years.

I am strongly against using RTV on ANY threads. You don't want to clog up the threads with silicone.

So what you are all saying is that there are really 6 bolts? Not 5? Definitely not 3?

Look at your new gaskets. Easiest way to tell.
