It'll probably cost a good amount of money, solely in labor, because its gonna take a few hours to pull, crack open, repair/rebuild, and reinstall even with a lift and the right tools.
Also, people are recomending general rebuilds for you because your car has a decent amount of miles racked up on it. Odds are when the mechanic thats working on your car diagnoses the root and cause of your problem, they'll probably also point out that your synchros or some of the many other moving parts inside are wearing down and will need to be replaced soon. With the transmission, it simpley costs too much and is too time consuming to be constantly removing it and taking it apart everytime one thing breaks. Therefore the smart thing to do is when something big does break, like your current problem, is to do a complete and solid rebuild.
Its very much worth the peace of mind knowing that youve got a reliable, freshly built transmission that won't break anytime soon versus fixing each problem one at a time, waisting your time and money, and waiting for the next problem to come along.
Also, parts-wise its not very costly to rebuild a broken T56 or almost any manual transmission for that matter. It is, however, very complicated. Thats why most mechanics won't or don't know how to repair transmissions. Even if you like to turn wrenches and happen to be good at working on cars, I'd very strongly recommend having a reputable local shop remove and repair your trans, or remove it yourself and send it to some place like tickperformance.com to be rebuilt.
