Default Jack points for motor?!?!

So recently I dropped my motor from the bottom of my car, with the trans, and K-member still attached, now I need to lift it (new oil pump, camshaft, ect..)(has to come off the k-member) i have removed my intake manifold (to get ported) and now i am a little stuck as to where i should mount these chains to lift the motor off the k member and if it makes sense to disconnect the trans to do this?!? here are some pics to help.... (I have a 20 foot tow chain with hooks on both ends)

Put a long bolt with a washer thru one end of the chain and bolt it to the front of drivers side head and do the same with the other end bolted to the passenger side head at the rear. You should be able to lift the motor from the k-frame once you remove the bolts from the motor mounts.

HMMM, aluminum heads. I’d put a bolt in the block like a water pump bolt hole and a transmission mount bolt hole on the opposite side.

hey man i would go with the first piece of advice. but disconnect the trans or put a jack underneath it . trying to lift both through alum heads might put some serious pressure on those heads. not knowing the history behind them (heat stress, cracks, machine work?) all my motors got pulled with 2 bolts in the heads and did fine. so you should be fine. as long as they arent hanging there for days and days. but to just pull the kmember out from underneath it you should be fine just put some wood and everything under it and set her down stable. youll be good bud looks good. and get that damn oil cleaned up! lol

Moco where the popo don't play (5 points for street racing), sounds good, so you think disconnect the tranny and lift from the heads?

Just do it with bolts in the heads. I lifted mine (complete with all accessories) with a bolt in the head and using the EGR stud (my chain wasn't long enough). It will hold just fine, as long as you don't plan on leaving it there overnight.

yea bud. i mean how long do you plan on holding the drivetrain up? like i said if your just lifting it to pull the kmember youll be fine leaving them attached. but if you plan on hold it up for a while i would disconnect them. but rom the heads will be fine.

and cecil county 11 point. street racing (8) evading police (2) and speeding (1) so yea i understand lol

One solid bolt in each head is enough to carry the weight forever. Don't worry about it hanging.

I've used Bolts in the Heads without issue.

Perhaps I need to be a little more detailed on what I'm trying to say.

I’ve seen too many times a long bolt just turned into an aluminum head with a chain or loop dangling loosely on it. This will try to pull the bolt in the aluminum threads at angles not at 90 degrees to the threads. Naturally, the longer the bolt, the more compounded the lever action is. Not a good scenario.

Torqueing a bolt with a hoisting plate or even over a chain loop would eliminate any off-angle pulling on the threads.

Threads in any aluminum casting without it’s designed bolt torqued in place should be treated with great care as they can be very fragile. This is really a non-issue with an iron casting.

Oh, that's what you're doing? Take off the tranny then. You're just making it harder to lift and balance with it attached.

And get yourself an engine stand. THEN you'll be able to work on it!

I was wondering why you have to lift the motor.. Definitely invest in an engine stand buddy. You can find them for like $50. Don't do any work on the engine while it's suspended from a hoist held on by a couple of bolts.. Plus it will probably move around as you work on it. Work smarter, not harder..
