Default Sputtering at high RPM

97 A4 Z28. Cai, EWP, long tubes, 373s.
car has 108,000

Car has a rough idea due to exhaust leaks which i need to get fixed. Before that it would run great all the way too about 4800 and start surging and not want to shift... Believe it might be the tune. Or maybe a fuel issue? All new ignition including opti.I have no idea what it could be it has hard starts in the mornings so im thinking fuel. Maybe one of you guys had this problem before. Thanks

Im having the high rpm miss just like you man. Difference is that mine starts good in the morning. I have replaced EVERY sensor on this engine. Im in the process of replacing my fuel filter and Fuel pressure regulator.

pretty much same here. except mine only does it at wot. if i lift off a 1/4 inch it acts fine. i have an msd opti. and it was doing it worse with my less than one year old gm opti. msd otvc wires, msd coil, new plugs, every sensor.

have you checked fuel pressure at WOT? and check the fuel pressure at start up too it should be between 41-47 psi with KOEO

sounds like it could either be the fuel pump dying slowly or a bad regulator

If the regulator is bad the vaccum hose should have fuel in it.

my car did the same thing a few years ago and the timing chain jumped a tooth. and the opti went bad

And btw, my car was sputtering above 5100 rpm's and I put a used Dynaspark in it and it fixed it. Took mine apart and it had oil in it along with what looked like a stock cap and rotor with 155k on it.

I say make sure and check the fuel pressure and make sure the o2's are good. Any codes?

I'm with you, O2's? Codes?
I had the same type of problem before I took my engine out for a new build but When I turn the opti upside down it ratles so I think that may have been my problem, but I still have to pull the cap and see what is moving around in there. Oh and I had no codes either but thought I would ask anyway. Also a 97 car.

taking a shot in the dark but my friend had this same problem with his 96 trans am and he found out it was his opti. he had a msd opti which i have heard some bad things about them. might be worth taking a look at?

I've also heard lots of bad things about the MSD optispark. I don't have any experience with it though.
