Default Only 17 mpg?

I am only getting 17 mpg. And I think that sucks. I have a M6 but I do most my driving in town and drive less than 2 miles to work. Does this have anything to do with it the car isn't even getting anywhere close to operating temp. I maybe drive it 50 miles a week. So its not really killing me only getting 17 mpg but still...I thought it would be more than that. Will a tune-up help? By tune-up I mean plugs, wires, air filter. I'm pretty sure that it has original plugs and wires from the factory. And I haven't looked in the air box at the filter.

no I don't think that I do. I drive 45 mph maybe 50. I drive in 5th gear because 6th gear "bogs" it down if I am not going atleast 52. I have driven it on the interstate at 70 on a 125 mile round trip and only got 19 mpg in 6th gear

Ouch, maybe you need to do a tune up. My car with the cc306 will knock out around 19 average.

my A4 gets roughly 15 mpg no matter how I drive it (75% hwy), a lot of people are getting 17+ even in their autos. You should be getting better, then again, so should I.

17 is what I got, when my m6 was running fine. Not much else I can think of for you.

I got 17 in my beater M6 car and I thought, eh maybe I'm goose'n it too much. I went to put headers on a found that it had multiple exhaust leaks, a few bad plugs and one plug wire that wasn't on all the way. I'm looking for mid 20's at least. I got mid 20's with a full bolt on A4 years ago so it's do-able.

17 is not bad at all for extremely short trips like that. On a cold engine, fuel consumption is horrible.

I'm in the same boat as you are, my mileage is terrible. Seems like 17mpg highway is very low with a bolt-on only car, if you search around there are people on here pushing close to 30mpg highway with a bolt on only M6 car. Of course yours won't be as good with an ice cold motor and such a short trip.

With my mileage issue I am leaning towards what Bersaglieri mentioned, I am pretty sure that I have some exhaust leaks pre-o2 sensors not to mention just bad/old o2 sensors, and the need for a serious tune-up.

What could help out is a datalogging program. I recently downloaded the TTS Datamaster software and just bought an ALDL cable so I'm going to finally get a look at what all the sensors in the car are reading and get this issue addressed.

Mine gets 17.5 city and 21 Hwy, My commute is similar to yours. I drive under 1 mile to work and if I don't warm up the car I get nowhere near operating temp. Alot has to do with the amount of time the car is running. The PCM won't go into closed loop until you've been at a certain temp for a certain amount of time. Otherwise it runs open loop, which is nowhere near as fuel efficient. You could warm it up, but then you use just as much if not more in letting the car warm up. Either way I say drive it and bear since there really isn't much you can do.

I am pretty sure that I do have some exhaust leaks. And the 02's are probly still the ones from the factory in 95. Dang it I need money to tune up and mod the car. I need my old job back.....I will definatley do the easy stuff/less expensive stuff. Plugs, wires, and air filter and see if that helps. I also believe that I have 3.42 gears.

When i was in college I had the same issue. I neve drove more than 3miles, I remember is was getting 175-200 miles per tank. It drove me insane, but i didnt have any issues on the highway. I would get around 26mpg, so i would really do a tune up. It should pay for itself in a few months.
