Default which would you do??

i am upgrading my rear and i am going to choose one of the two following options...

option 1...97 Cobra 8.8, 28 spline center section with 4.10s. Cut the tubes off my 10 bolt and weld them to the 8.8...

option 2...97 Cobra 8.8 housing, 31 spline carrier with 4.10s. Install 31 spline hardened moser axles. Use the cobra brakes. Fabricate ladder bars and ditch the torque arm OR weld on an adjustable torque arm mount. Cut the hardware off the 10 bolt and weld to the 8.8

this is a daily driver 97 ss with between 400 and 450 rwhp. PLEASE dont suggest mosers or danas or 12 bolts because i cant afford them. I can do either of these for under 1000 installed.

i talked to gregrob and he favors option 1. what would you experienced members choose out of these 2?

really?? i said of THOSE TWO...I cant afford the strange 60 or any of the other rears. This is a cost effective way if done right. so please dont suggest others unless you can sell me one for less than 600!

i am leaning toward number 2 as well but just wanna kinda get some feedback. would you keep the torque arm or ditch it for ladder bars?

How are you going to mount the torque arm on both options?

gregrob is working on an adjustable torque arm bracket that welds onto the center. If i do the tq arm i will pay him to make me one.

also i have already found a 31 spline carrier but i have to get new axles as well because GM are 28 spline. No big deal though, its doable.

i dont really "want" an s60 or moser or anything that big...my car wont be going up in power from what i have when i finish this build so i just want something cheap that will be durable with 400 to 450rwhp.

trust me, i know the s60 and company will hold and they are MORE than enough but if this 8.8 setup will work well with my setup AND its less than 1000 then i dont want to spend the big bucks on something else that is technically overkill. However if this breaks, im not out a buttload of money either ya know?

Personally go option 3.......Cut the tubes off the 10 bolt and weld to the center of the 8.8, get a 31 spline diff., get the moser/ strange/ etc. axles. and run your brakes. The axles may cost a bit more since they'll probably be custom. If done right that 8.8 should hold power quite well seeing as it's darn near the same size as a 9". It's still considerably larger than the 7.5" (IIRC) that the 10 bolt is. Either way it'll support a lot more than you think. In fact 98% of the car here could probably stand to run that rear as opposed to the 9"/12 bolt/S60 option (I don't hear of many fox bod's blowing built rear out from under them, and those little bastages can make some serious HP.)

ok so if i do the option 3 i take the cobra 8.8 center, weld on the torque arm bracket, weld on my 10 bolt tubes, use stock brakes, stock length, throw in the 31 spline carrier, 4.10 gears, and custm moser 31 spline axles and i am golden?? what length would the custom axles need to be then?

that is almost exactly like option 1 except instead of 28 spline i am going 31 spline.

exactly. The 31 spline will be stronger than the 28 and hold significantly more hp. As for length you'd have to measure once you get the tubes in. Then contact the manufacturer and figure out how and where to measure and then they can get you a set made up. shouldn't be too hard, I think the biggest deal will be making sure that the housing is the same overall width of the 10 bolt, and then making sure the tubes sit perpendicular to the diff so that everything is square and you won't get an alignment issue or worse a tweaked housing and then you burn through bearings, and possibly have severe control issues.

Yeah a good welder should be able to handle it. I personally would go to a driveline shop. Usually a good place that specializes in rearend work. They should be able to remove the tubes out of the 10 bolt and make sure they go into the new center at the right angle so you don't have some crazy pinion angle that can't be corrected (pinion location in relation to LCA mounting points). Then all you need is the mount for the Tq. arm and you'll be set. The only thing I can't remember off hand is if the 8.8 has a c-clip axle. If it does then you won't have that hard of a time getting axles, but I would spend the extra cash and get a c-clip elim kit and then you should be ready for just about any hp you can throw at it. I know personally of a few 8.8's that have survived for quite a few years behind 1000 hp blower motors, so you should be good
