Default Help Removing 1996 TA Trunk Struts

I’m posting this in two places, because I don’t know which one fits better. So I apologize if you come across this twice. LT1 Mods and General Repairs.

I have a 1996 Trans Am, the trunk struts are shot – trunk won’t hold itself open at all. I ordered the replacements and then quickly found an issue. I cannot find a tool that will fit snugly into the octagon shaped bolt holding the struts on. So my question is, how the hell do I remove these bolts, and if there is a specific tool I need, what is it called?

I wish I still had a working camera I would take a picture of the bolt.

If you need any more information, or I’m not explaining something enough, or correctly, please let me know and I will try to supply all information that I can.

Thanks for your help,

yeah i was gonna say its a torx of some sort. i was thinking T47 but that was what i used on my seats when i reupholstered them. I was able to borrow one at autozone and the guys there helped me install them. They cost $60 for the pair but it was worth it to have them help me put them in.

Part that latches onto hatch use a small screwdriver to lift the metal retainer. Should come off with ease. Remember to put something to hold the hatch up. It hurts when it comes down on your head....

that was what i did. i was in the back holding the hatch to make sure it didn't fall while they changed out the struts.

That T-50 did the job. Bolts gave me a little hell at first, but a little WD40 did the job. Thanks again everyone for the suggestions and help.
