At What point does a stock style CAI become a restriction
Curious to see at what point should one look into a different CAI setup and the stock style becomes a restriction? I have talked to Larry @ Speed Inc about running a LS type lid & Ram Air setup but not sure if I want to go that route just yet, So Post up what your using and maybe your Hp Level as well. Thanks!

I took my bumper off my Firebird, cut the foam and ran some 3in tubing from the two scoops in the bumper and routed them to the Box area (not the air box) and changed the old rubber tubing to an aluminum elbow and got a cheapy ebay cold air intake and a K&N cone filter.... My motor is out currently tho so I can't tell you the gains yet unfortunately

even at 11.53 i more than likely wouldve picked up some time going with an LS1 lid setup but i couldnt find an ultra Z hood. im going with a single plane for my 383 and probably wont be running an intake setup at the track. on the street i have to figure something out

Maybe a dumb question, but sitting ontop of the radiatorlike that, isn't the air with a lid hotter than a regular cold air intake? Either way, because of the gains and the better placement, I really want to do it someday.

No cause the Lid is in front of the Radiator..all the hot air is behind it.
That and the air is blowing up from the bottom and going right into the Lid.
Mine fits under the stock Hood..

I don't like the look of the LS1 lid swaps. Just generally doesn't look like it is supposed to be there IMO. I think the stock MAF will be a restriction before a stock style intake.

Slightly off topic but I did some comparisons between 52mm and 58mm TB's. Also did some testing to find where the LT1 style intake restrictions really are.
I did an experiment last year using Datamaster that showed what appeared to be positive gains with my current 58mm TB over my ported 52mm TB. I saw lesser drop in MAP KPA especially at higher RPMs with the 58mm TB. All testing was done in the same day under the same conditions.
Here are my findings.
I subtracted the MAP readings on datamaster from atmosphere. Lower the number the better.
There was roughly about 0.9 -1.1 KPA @6K RPM less drop with the 58mm over the 52mm. I think I determined in my testing that the stock MAF with the screen was not significantly restrictive but the 90 degree elbow is. I think the 90 degree turns tends to slow the air movement a bit. Hence the reason the LS1 intake path is a superior design without the 90 degree turns.
I did the same datalogging and found that my K&N FIPK definitely outflowed my old AS&M CAI at the upper RPM ranges. The K&N has a much larger filter and a larger "big tube" so that must be accounting for the better flow.

That pic was for the OP to show how it fit under the Hood..here is the finished product.
Longest travel path for the Air is 12"..smallest diameter is the Lid itself.

I think Merv's lid conversion looks pretty dang good. This is far better than some of the hack jobs that have been posted. I would love to go to a lid but I cant bring myself to cuting the steel radiator support.

If you do it clean and straight it doesn't look that bad..that and you aren't really diminishing from the integrity of the car..the Bumper Support is the main piece there in the front that is goin to take any kind of hit.
I've seen a few of these wreck in the front, and that core support gets pretty mangled real damn quick..even when nothing touches it.

I was going to do the lid conversion like merv, but I ended up getting an Ultra Z, so I'm just going with a T/A ram air box. However, if I never got the hood or I ended up with the Sunoco hood, I would've done what he did in a heartbeat. From what I remember, merv picked up quite a bit with the lid conversion.
